Hi all my setup speed quest has begun! Time to build a pier. The plan is to use 6 in drain pipe, M10 threaded rods, 6 mm x 200mm steel plate and of course lots of concrete. I'm going for a single plate design at the moment which can be changed at a later date if needed. Will keep an update on progress.

Good Stuff! Only other thing you could need is a strong-but-docile friend (to dig the now obligatory HUGE hole in the ground)?

Well got a bit more done today. M10 rods cut to hold the plate in place. Went for 18 in long. 2 in is bent to prevent any turning in the concrete. The remainder rods 20 in or so will serve as spoke grips for the main pipe to strengthen the pier at the base. Now ready for the wife to start digging lol. There are no hard and fast rules for this project so anyone feel free to jump in

I want to do something similar but I need one the can be disassembled when not in use. I simply do not have the space for a permanent one. Looking forward to your next instalment

Excellent project Carl.
Don't forget to fill the pipe with sand to deaden any vibrations.

I simply do not have the space for a permanent one. Looking forward to your next instalment I have one of these for my EQ6. Absolutely rock-solid. It sits up outside our clubroom and has for the last 2 years. But it would only take me about 1 minute to pull it apart to take it elsewhere. www.harrisontelescopes.co.uk/acatalog/Pillar_For_SkyWatcher_EQ6_Mounts.html

Thanks Ken, looks superb but no good for me. I am set up on my decking which naturally wobbles. I need to have a concrete base dug in with a plate and four bolts so I can attach or remove as necessary. It's just another one of those future projects!

It would have the same 3 legged base, and when it is set up and polar aligned, I will just encase the base in a concrete pad. No more cables snagging on tripod legs when slewing or flipping, and no more cameras getting banged on legs either.
