Well this thread got me thinking of installing a permanent pier in my garden. I'm a bit fed up with cables snagging the tripod legs when slewing or the scope hitting the legs when near the zenith. Now with my mount out of action yet again, even after celestron claimed to have repaired it, it will give me something to do while I await a replacement. (hopefully)
I am actively sourcing parts and materials.

That's great Allan there are so many ways of doing it but I think this is the most straightforward. I intend to leave the mount on over the summer so I just have to remove the cover and add the scope and weights. No more pa for solar either all ready to go.

I've been researching designs, and am trying to locate a 1.8mtr length of 6" steel pipe from a scrap merchants. This will have a brake disc or metal plate welded on top with an access hole below it for the Mounting nut. Failing that, it will be plastic/concrete design like yours, but using brake discs instead of flat plate. I chose brake discs because they are available free from almost any brake centre scrap bin.

Thats a bit over engineered for my needs Ken. If I can source the scrap 6" steel pipe, it will be a much simpler design and build.

Nice work Carl and fast too! I'm now thinking of a wooden style pier so I can attach or detach as needed. There seems to be a few who've had some success with wood and compared to my current set up it would still be a huge improvement. Watch this space...

Well done Carl. That actually looks quite simple now that I see it all together.

Cheers Karl once you work out what you need and have it all ready it can be done in days, what specs do you need in case I come across something?

Well done Carl. That actually looks quite simple now that I see it all together. The hardest bit was deciding on how to make the mount on the plate Allan. I may have went OTT on the hole size as well but won't hurt. I didn't see the point in a second plate design but if need be the plate can be changed in the future. The simpler the better I think less to go wrong

Cheers Karl once you work out what you need and have it all ready it can be done in days, what specs do you need in case I come across something? Thanks Carl, not sure yet but the idea is to have a concrete base under the decking with 4 bolts sticking up so I can attach the pier to them when needed. I bit like the Altair Astro pier base. When not use I would cover the hole with a hatch made from the same decking I cut out to make the access. As for the pier itself, I'm still looking at various designs but once I decide on they design I'll draw something up on Sketch Up. It's been a while since I used the man shed so looking forward to it www.altairastro.com/product.php?productid=16162www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Number/5533718

Going by the colour of the tail it doesn't look like it was your cat Carl. Was it the neighbours cat?
