Was over at uncle John's workshop,, Uncle john a very generous man all his life and in his death he never changed,, he wanted the best for me,, and left me all jis astronomy equipment,, Heartbreaking in a way but he was always a positive guy and wanted me to stay in the hobby but having to do it myself now,, Bit of fun ,, uncle John had an Australian Bush hat with the corks on it,,and I had to get a photo with rosemary his partner,, great way to celebrate scopemobile in the video astronomy forum.

Nice to hear from you again Davy. I've watched all sorts of Aussie tv programmes in the outback but never seen Aussies wearing hats with corks on. Amazon sells hats with corks as party hats! The Aussies do very good impressions of windscreen wipers, we call it the Australian wave, they move their hands to shift the flies and then they do it again when the flies return. The hat reminded me of Les Hiddins - The Bush Tucker Man. I bought my own Aussie hat a couple of years ago, got more cloud than I ever did buying astro gear, I did think the Aussies were having a laugh! All the best. Harry & Margaret.

Harry, I have been on Aussie soil my whole 65 years and I have never seen an Aussie (or anyone else) wear a hat with hanging corks and that waving of the hands for flies is known as the 'Aussie Salute' and we all do it. We have to. The damn things are everywhere in Oz.

LOL! I thought that Aussies even with their sense of humour would never wear hats with corks!
Thanks for the fly waving correction, 'salute' sounds good.
Watched Aussie Gold hunters yesterday, the heat would finish me off, never mind the flies!

Yeah, much of Oz hovers around 40c (104F). But we also have more snow than Switzerland which surprises many people We're a land of contrasts

People from Siberia and Inuit Indians would say Scotland's weather is so warm all the time Someone from Oz would say Scottish summers are cold You would probably roast down here in Autumn or Spring and in our winter you'd be walking around in shorts and a T shirt while we sook, and huddle around our heaters

Kangaroo fun: - Stupid animals! I have to dodge them every time I drive. Our town is full of them and surrounded by them. It's a damn takeover They really are a nuisance and a hazard. The sides of the roads are littered with dead ones, and they stink bad!

I have an idea how bad that would smell as when I did train servicing underside inspections were everybody's least favourite job due to the amount of animal & bird entrails. However I didn't experience that at 40 degree plus heat. The next problem is animals/birds that feed on roadkill. I know that anyone that hires a motorcycle down under is well warned about kangaroo happy hour at dusk when they are difficult to see. When I think about it we are lucky here, hardly any dangerous creatures and roadkill is generally smaller than in Oz. Biggest roadkill here is Muntjac deer an introduced species that escaped from a park. They are still smaller than a Red kangaroo at 9kg to 18kg in weight. A Red kangaroo can be nearly 10 times that weight. Scandinavian Volvo/Saab cars had to able to withstand a moose hit. Wild animals just don't understand cars.

The sides of the roads are littered with dead ones, and they stink bad! Yeah Ken . They cause so much trouble when I am out on the bike. You never know which direction they are heading. Davy, I was in Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful city but it rained every day I was there. UK is very expensive compared to Oz. cheers Paul
