Hello,
When searching for USB capture devices on ebay there is a lot to choose from.
My question is, what do you use, does price matter, and was it hassle free (no chasing drivers, etc)
I've done a bit of reading on the easycap/ezcap versions as a cheap frame grabber and see that one is genuine and the other is a fake. Anyone have either and would recommend either?

From what I have read the fakes can be problematic so better with an original . I use the Dazzle 100 and haven't had any problems at all. Bought off the bay for about £20.

I have both the real and fake EasyCAP cards. When i first bought it from ebay for £6 they sent me a fake... i complained then they sent me a real one. The one on the left with smaller holes on it and the name EasyCAP on it is the 'real' one that seems to work fine. The fake one came with a mini cd with drivers on it. The cd was broke so i spent soooo long trying to find drivers online only to find out i had a fake capture card lol. The real one came with a dvd with drivers and v10.0 of Ulead visual Studio capture software that i have found works very well for me. Oh i should say that the advert on ebay i bought it from did show a pic of the real one! With the letters on it. But they sent me a fake.

This is where it gets weird. I have an el-cheapo ebay Video grabber called the EasyCAP but it is a different one to the photos Chris shows. Mine doesn't have all those holes in it. Only a small bunch of holes for the activity light. It came with a Mini Disk that is actually called "XH6315 Memory Card Reader Driver". It cost $19 on ebay, and yet it has run faultlessly for me for the last 2+ years. I Broadcast with it regularly. I also have the $80 Mallincam Video Grabber but it has never worked for me. Some computers allow some things to run and others not. Weird huh! This is the EasyCAP I use: Attachments:

Ok so they do work...just not very well Would rather avoid the dvr route to be honest. Much prefer the flexibility of the netbook + capture card. Plus the dvr's dont look cheap!

I use the cheap Chinese copy of the easycap, seems to serve its purpose. Also 2.4ghz wireless converter and 2.4ghz usb wireless receiver. that just about works at close range, I think the transmitter is the weakest link, need to look at the antenna to see if I can extend its range a bit more.

Thats cool john! How close is close range? How much did that cost or did you already have it?

its a bit weird this one, scope about 2 mts from the back door and about another 2 mts inside and its ok, but if I walk in between the scope and laptop the picture goes all wobbly or if a touch the antenna on the transmitter it throws a wobbly, but then again I've managed to walk to the front of the house and just loose a bit of picture quality.
I was thinking of attaching a 13cm wire on the end of the transmitter antenna to see if that would help
transmitter was about £10 and receiver £30

That seems to be a problem with Radio signals. I think they call it close-looping or some such weird technical name It happens near a radio tower too, when you are listening to a particular Radio station in your car and drive too close to the radio tower it goes Bizzarro

After a long time searching and trying different software I'm 99% sure that the DC60 EasyCap card will not work on windows 8 or a mac ('Easycap viewer' works on a mac but cant change brightness, contrast etc so useless for video astronomy)

Because my $80 Mallincam Video Grabber doesn't work properly, Rock Mallin is sending me the new advanced model 'HD MallinCam Frame Grabber' with VDVE (Variable Digital Video Enhancer) for Free! Amazing service!!! It is the only frame grabber designed for Astronomical video work.
I will report how well it works after I get it.

It was great to see Rock offer you this the other night on your broadcast! I did wonder if it was going to be free That really is great customer service / support! He clearly cares a great deal about his customers!

Yes Chris, Rock certainly looks after his customers. They become his friends. The deal doesn't end once he has sold you something. Not many gentlemen like that in business. If something doesn't work, or it plays up, he replaces it or fixes it. He also likes to chat about anything as a friend does. Not just VA.
He is also in his Yahoo group every day answering questions and participating in conversations about any aspect of Video Astronomy.
He could sit back and live off the quality and reputation of his products. They sell themselves. But no, he gets involved in our experiences and enjoys seeing our results. I have no qualms about calling him a friend. Not just someone I bought a product from.
Jack is the same. Jack is the International seller of Mallincam products, so he is actually the man we purchase from but he becomes a friend as well. Both Jack and Rock care deeply about customer satisfaction. And they are both heavily involved in doing Video Astronomy, not just supplying.

Have to agree with Ken on this, since purchasing my Xtreme both Jack and Rock have been fantastic, great product, great service!
