I have been looking to make a allsky cam for years. And now that I finally have the video astronomy setup that I wanted, I have no projects for those cloudy/rainy nights. So I am thinking about building a permanent outdoor allsky camera. First thing I need is a capable camera. My requirements are high sensitivity ccd, 512x Sens Up, and compact. I do not want to use a cam like the sammy, as I want something smaller. This led me to the following camera on ebay. Effio-P 960H WDR Board Camera with 170 deg fisheye - www.ebay.com/itm/700TVL-SONY-Effio-P-960H-WDR-Board-Camera-1-56mm-lens-170deg-Wide-Angle-OSD-/261176734239?pt=US_Security_Cameras&hash=item3ccf58b21fAfter looking at the specs of the sony DSP, It appears this cam will do 512x Sens. Here is the spec sheet on the DSP: www.sony.net/Products/SC-HP/cx_news/vol63/pdf/cxd4129_30gg.pdfWe all already know the capabilities of the 960H sony sensor (Exview HAD II) What is everyone's thoughts on this board cam for an allsky camera? The waterproof housing should be fairly easy to make. They sell the clear acrylic domes all over ebay. If anyone has made one before or planing to, please post your setup and pics. Thanks, Hemmi

Thanks John! Please post pics of your setup. I'm interested in setup pics, housings, mounting etc. Trying to get ideas. I'm also thinking of getting a mini projector and mounting so it displays the allsky view on his ceiling at night

Sounds like a good project Hemmi that camera should be fine. I use a Sammy in a CCTV Housing (Labgear £20 Ebay). Although its not all sky I just point it towards an incoming meteor shower. Its at ground level so easy to adjust. One thing I have noticed is you only need a small amount of sense up to even pickup faint satellites. If I use to much everything in the sky sets off the trigger software and you end up with a harddrive full of recordings. The casing I got has a blow heater board in it to keep the glass fogging up which I would recommend. Its a small fan with a temp sensor and two large 5W Resistors basically (can be got of Ebay). The software I use is HandiAVI which works fine and you can take timelapse as well. Or UFO capture bit more expensive.

Think the projector showing on the ceiling is a great idea, he'll never go to sleep, he'll be staring at that all night long just in case he misses something.

This one might be good www.securitycamera2000.com/products/HD%252dSDI-Sony-2Meg-1080P-D%252dWDR-3D%252dDNR-Board-Camera-OSD-Optional-Lens.htmlHere are the specs 1/2.8"Sony 2 Mega Pixel Sensor; NextChip2400 DSP; Default Mega pixel 4.2mm lens, optional 3.6mm, 6mm, 8mm, 12mm, 16mm; Full HD 2 Mega Pixel 1920 x 1080P@30; 3D Digital Noise Reduction (3D-DNR); Digital Wide Dynamic Range (D-WDR); Digital Sense Up 30X; 64x D-Zoom; Automatic White Balance; Freeze; Mirror; Privacy; Lens Shading Correction (LSC); OSD Language: English /Chinese(Simplified/Traditional); Built-in IR-CUT filter; HD-SDI output; CVBS BNC output; DC 12V input; Size (include lens): 38mm X 38mm X 45mm. Color: 1.0 lux, BW : 0.5 lux, Color DSS : 0.002 lux, BW DSS : 0.0008 lux This may be sensitive enough in B&W mode and a lens change, x30 SENS is the most I can find.

I decided against the HD-SDI cameras for one simple reason. HD-SDI is expensive, very expensive. Not the cameras themselves, but capture cards and or converters etc. Just not an investment I want to make for an allsky/cloudcam at this time. I ended up buying this: www.ebay.com/itm/700TVL-SONY-Effio-P-960H-WDR-Board-Camera-1-56mm-lens-170deg-Wide-Angle-OSD-/261176734239?pt=US_Security_Cameras&hash=item3ccf58b21fIt should work nicely. That is when it arrives in 4 months off the slow boat from china, lol. I just have to figure out some sort of way to protect the sensor from the sun during the day. Some kind of solenoid controlled shutter or something. The sun will destroy these cameras in a few hours. I can not find a wide enough auto iris lens. The widest FOV auto Iris lens I can find is 2.8mm, but that is only like 80-90 degrees. I want close to 180 degrees. If anyone has ever seen a wider auto Iris lens for MTV mount than 2.8mm let me know.

Hemmi, the simple way I protect it is its on a plug timer set for dusk to dawn, as my lens is manual iris fully open all the time. This also stops the software picking up birds etc and recording

Ahh good point it dosnt as Im not using a fisheye type, more to stop the camera "whiting out" all day. A bit of DIY may be called for
