Thanks everyone. Managed to get more done today. This time back inside the Control Room, constructing one of the desks. The desk is MDF with a Pine frame (and chipboard side). The MDF top is 1600mm x 600mm (5'3" x 2') and the Pine frame is 70 x 35 (2 3/4" x 1 3/8") With the door to the Roll-Away section open so you understand where the desk is located: There will be another desk at the far wall (tomorrow): How it looks front on: Painted: The next desk will go in tomorrow

I got the second desk in today Framework: MDF top on: Plenty of desk space now for two operators: I didn't paint this second desk today because by the time I had finished building it the temperature had dropped down to 2 degrees celsius (35 fahrenheit) and it won't dry overnight, so I'll paint it tomorrow

The weather has required extra patience but can't wait to see your "Open House" and official unveiling!

Man on a mission ken..are you insulating the observatory.

Yes davy, the Control room will be insulated in the walls and roof and the roll-away section will have the roof insulated. The walls of the Roll-Away section won't need insulation because there will be false walls inside. You'll see what I mean when we build them Rick, yeah, we don't get the cold like you folks do up there in the Northern Hemisphere so we aren't used to freezing, but we wear Pullovers when it's over 100F. Same Sames, just opposites

ALMOST FINISHED After weeks of rain, hail, damaging winds, and even snow, we finally managed to get more done this weekend. We built the internal false walls of the Roll-Away section. It is only 1200mm (4 feet) high to give a low level view of the north and south, and will later get a hinged fold-up/down extension to block any wind, if needed. It will raise the wall height another 300mm (12 inches). The wall also prevents people walking into the Telescopes in the dark when the observatory is open The Frames made and checked for fit:Then Fibro-Cement Sheeting attached to frames:A first coat of paint to seal the Fibro:A Handsome Lad Tim looking very cold and tired as we get ready to install the walls:First wall installed, bolted down with Dynabolts:All walls installed, with concrete silicon sealer underneath to prevent water entering under the frame. Just needs the painting finished:and how it looks fully assembled:
and seen internally with the observatory closed:
The floor space with the internal walls installed is 2400 x 2200mm (8' x 7'3")
This part has now completed the Observatory section (except paint). The next section to finish is the insulation in the Control Room, and wiring in the Electrical points. Then it should be 'All Systems Go' Not long now So, here's how it looks now with all major parts built:

Done some more "dotting the i's and crossing the t's" today WOW!The electrician weaved his electric stick and we now have Mains power to the control desks: I cut the internal wall sheet (Tim thought my cutting method was hilarious and snapped a pic of me sawing) and then we fit the wall panel so the electrician could fit the Power Points, then I painted it More Mains Power Points fitted outside in the Observatory FINALLY!!!! The Mount and Scope go into the Observatory. A Skywatcher EQ6 (Orion Atlas) and Meade SN10 Astrograph, and it only takes up half the space in there leaving the other half available for another setup The setup is checked for clearance with the roof, and passes with flying colours Just a Pic showing the Telescope in relation to control desk How it looks from outside and the whole Observatory with great clear sky view
This is the first clear sky we've had for weeks but unfortunately the scope isn't set up ready to use yet. All the data cables have to be routed through the wall and made safe so no-one trips on them. I'd hate it if we got this far and a visitor tripped and got injured or damaged equipment. Sooooo close! YEE-HAAAA!!!

Just as well we got as much as possible done this weekend (I did some more today) because we have been given a Severe Weather Warning as a low is coming in late tonight bringing with it damaging winds and flooding rain. Tomorrow will continue with damaging winds, flooding rain and Hail. Monday is forecast for more rain. Tuesday is bringing in Snow and they predict the coldest temperatures in Australia for Decades!!! The wind will be coming directly from Antarctica Wednesday will be similar but no mention of snow, just showers. So, I can't see me working on the Observatory for a few days

Its looking great, but stop sending that weather up here. Chris, this weather is atrocious!!! It is currently pouring down rain with strong winds, same again all day and night tomorrow, followed by snow on Tuesday. I've heard of the 'Astronomers Curse' bringing clouds when someone buys a telescope, but is this what we get for building an Observatory?

Same Sames, just opposites When it gets too cold to bear in SoCal, I just turn off the air conditioner. Nice observatory Ken! You should do a video tour of it.

Nice observatory Ken! You should do a video tour of it. Thanks Rob. Me? make a Video? Yes, I will be doing a Video tour of it, but not until it is finished and operational. I think people expect one from me due to my habit of making videos about almost anything On 'You Tube' I have posted several videos on Astrophotography, many on Video Astronomy, Harley riding videos, Harley-Davidson repairs, storm videos, a flood Video, Grandmas house being delivered, my sons singing and playing guitar, Worlds Smallest Roll-off Roof Astronomical Observatory, and other stupid stuff. Me? make a Video?

Time for a few more Pics Here's why we haven't done much lately (yes, it snows in Australia): But the sun came out for the weekend, and even though it's still cold we managed to get a couple of days in. Angus the Club Treasurer came to give Barry and I some assistance on Saturday (we know he was really snooping to see how the Club funds were being spent) and on Sunday we spent most of the day starting to get the insulation done in the Control Room and Observatory. Here we removed the walls in the control room so we could add the Fibreglass batts: and then put the walls back up again: and the Observatory section is being done in 10mm Foilboard attached to wooden battens to give an air gap. Tim patiently waiting and holding the roof panels up for Barry to drill the holes for the battens: and Barry up on the roof drilling the holes: Now the Battens are up, the Foilboard gets screwed and glued to them. Here's where we are up to: More pics of the Cablework tomorrow (if it doesn't snow again) ---- EDIT: Too cold and raining to do anything. You'll have to wait
