Hello, I'm Kyle, developer of the AstroLive software for live processing of video astronomy. I just found this site via a link from the Mallincam group and wanted to drop by and say hello. If you have any questions about my software or processing in general I'd be happy to answer them. Thanks, Kyle Goodwin Astro Precision Instruments

Welcome Kyle! I have been eying your software for awhile. Does your current software support the new Mallincam Jr Pro/PC version. This new mallincam version was announced a week or so ago.
I would think it would work as a xtreme minus cooling controls, but just want to be sure before I purchase.
I have a question about plate solving with these video cameras. I have attempted to use plate solving before, but hot pixels etc seemed to make solving fail 50% of the time. How well does the plate solving work in your software?
Also is there any plans to include a directshow driver? so the live processed image can be fed into Nightskiesnetwork.com, upsteam.com, skype, etc.
Regards,
Hemmi

Hemmi,
Yes, it does support the Mallincam Jr PRO/PC. It will do everything with it the same as the Xtreme except for the cooling. The plate solving is as you say, only about 50-70% effective because of the low resolution and noise inherent in video cameras, but I'm working on ways to improve that with image pre-processing prior to running the plate solve.
As far as DirectShow output for the video stream that is on the feature list currently for version 1.4. Currently you can do it using one of the tools that captures a portion of your screen and feeds it in as a video source. There are several that people currently use for NSN. Skype and Google Hangouts etc also can just capture a window for sharing and I've used that successfully as well.

What sort of interface does it use and how do you connect it to your computer? What sort of video do you use it for? Kyle

Hi Kyle welcome to the forum! I only recently heard about your software. I will give the trial version a play about with next time i can. Sounds like it does some nice stuff. The fact that you are here willing to provide support is great and a real selling point in my eyes.

I never mind answering questions, no trouble at all guys. I really like to support SCB2000 if I can rig up some sort of a coaxial control remote with computer interface on it so that you could use buttons on the screen to manipulate the OSD. I will also be releasing with 1.3 (next major release) a driver that will allow just capture from a frame grabber without computer control of the camera so you could use the physical remote or whatever to set up the camera and then the computer to handle processing the video stream. Hi Kyle,
Ive not had a chance to play about with the software yet. Ive just read through the pdf and it sounds good. But could you explain a bit more about the GOTO/ telescope control section please. Theres nothing in the pdf about it yet. Was just wondering how thats going to work. Like is it just going to be a list of objects that you select and thats it? Or will it maybe give you the functionality to make fine adjustments in the software to centre the object in the FOV? in essence replicating the hand controller.
Cheers
Chris

Chris,
Yes it will provide both of those functions. It has a catalog with all the Messier, NGC, and IC objects in it which you can GOTO once you've connected your mount via ASCOM. It also has a frame and focus section in the app where you can "nudge" your mount just like you would with the hand controller at a selectable rate. I have an Advanced VX mount I use when I want a quick look with a small scope and I used to always use NexRemote with it to have the remote on the computer or with a gamepad. Now when I'm using AstroLive I don't need to do that anymore since the only thing I need the hand controller for is the initial alignment and everything else can be done in AstroLive.

I think you have sold me Kyle, your software is a one stop shop. Any chance a future upgrade would including guiding?

Kyle,
I downloaded the trail, but having some strange issues. My desktop resolution is 1366x768 on my laptop, however with this resolution, some items seem to get cut off. What is the recommended resolution? And is there a way to resize the fonts so that the program works on lower resolutions?
Thanks Kyle!

Thanks Kyle. I have no idea what ASCOM is. All i know is i can control my scope using Stellarium and my meade 505 cable plugged into the meade 497 hand controller. But stellarium lacks fine adjustments... So is useless for remote mount control.
Btw a heads up... The link to download the ASCOM platform in the PDF doc is old. It makes you download version 6 then when you go to install astrolive it tells you that you need version 6.2 or something.
Question...Ive had a very quick play about with it... i didnt connect my camera or mount tho... just my grabber (connected to my dvr with random outdoor cam). It wouldnt display the image. Does it need to be connected for camera control to be able to just view the image coming from the grabber?

Kyle, Here is a screenshot of astrolive on my laptop. Notice how some items are cut off. Is there a way to correct this?

I think you have sold me Kyle, your software is a one stop shop. Any chance a future upgrade would including guiding? Guiding integration is planned for the future, but it may be in a "professional" version or similar. I don't have concrete plans yet for it, but I'd like to do it.
