Thought a wee update do the thread was called for. The adaptor and flatner came for the esprit and can achieve focus with the Canon 5d mk2,, that's one worry less. The asiair is also here, problems with my tablet,, it's android 4 software, asi app requires version 6,, new tablet required. Tablet arrived two days ago,, 15hrs to charge,, nice 10" version,, Asi app downloaded in no problem. Tonight I downloaded the win 32 image software to laptop and done the software backup for the asiair Pro,, Hopefully start putting it all together and start practicing,, get cable management sorted out. Weather por as usual,, lot of fog recently

Davy,Will you be using the guiding features on the ASIair and your portable setup ? I would like to give it a go only because it looks relatively straight forward with the software. I wont have the patience for anything longer than about 2 minutes. Havent had the scopes out since Christmas, but now the nights are getting longer ,I am getting keen again. Now for some decent weather.
cheers Paul

Hi Paul,, yes I want to try and use all the features i can with the asiair Pro,, pa, plate solving and guiding,
Finding the esprit a bit heavy on the azgti,, may go back to the eq3 Pro using the esprit,, The more portable I try ang go the more I get bogged down, Can see me having to make so decisions,, do I just use the 5d mk2 and buy a samyang 14mm f2 lens and make up a rig to get a guide scope on the set up 😬

Not been happy having the esprit on the azgti portable set up,, I just think it's two top heavy once the Canon 5d mk2, orion mini guide scope and asiair Pro is on it,, lot of money to come crashing down if bumped and that's on a decent video tripod. The other aspect is portability,, it was growing arms and legs the build. Sat back over weekend and chilled,, came too far,, spent too much to give up on the portable kit,, Looked at getting the samyang 14mm f2 lens,, that's coming in at approx £250 second hand. Then comes all the hassle trying to mount the kit, The other thing I looked at was another scope 🤔😬 a williams red cat and,, I gave myself a good slap in the face to get a grip,, £600+,, that's a no. Finally the clouds lifted and the sun shone down on my bald head and the answer is the www.firstlightoptics.com/guide-scopes/sky-watcher-evoguide-50ed-guidescope.htmlSmall,, Ed glass, great fov with the Canon dslr, and of course can still be used as a guide scope, So took the plunge,, been the cheapest option and best fit for my needs in the portable set up,, the new dovetail mount gives me options to mount the orion guide scope and the asiair Pro..

Probably read my post on the 50ed guide scope and trouble getting focus on the 5d mk2 full frame camera,, This was a gamble as I had not found any posts on a full frame 50ed configuration,, Just got to try stuff at times 😬, it's no big deal as I knew it was OK with crop sensor dslr and I have 4,,so I'm covered in that department, But will keep testing the 5d till I can post up my findings. I'm in no rush to complete the portable set up,, this season has been very poor weather wise and covid19 restrictions have kept us indoors as well,, So plan of action,, Looking at more expenditure,, 😔 I can go with the crop sensor camera and 50ed, make a bracket and fit my orion mini guider with my 178 and rig it to the azgti and control via asiair Pro. And I have a good set up. Or I can save up and get another zwo camera, this would make the set up ultra portable,, And to be honest now my 178 has been cleaned and showing good views this looks a more exciting way to go.

I must confess Davy,I have gone down a similar path to you and am drawing the same conclusions. I have the vixen plate version of the Evoguide 50 ED and havent found a place for it yet. The Esprit 80 , at about 4kg, is far too heavy for the AZ-GTI and so my portable setup for the Esprit 80 is the SW EQ35M. I keep saying I am going to use the ED50 as a guide scope for the Esprit but in reality ,I never do it. So,I have an AZ GTI that I never use and an Evoguide 50 ED that I never use so I have put them together. I have the older vixen type plate but have a svbony guider scope ring ( www.svbony.com/sv116/ )that is more suitable for mounting on the AZ- GTI I will most probably use the zwo 178 on it..... and I will use it !! cheers Paul

Davy ,why not use the setup of the ed 50,az-gti and the 178 ? It should give a reasonable resolution and fov. You have more experience than me, but I would think the 178 on the mini guider might give you blocky stars. Or is the fov wide enough that you would not notice it ?
cheers Paul

Paul I have used my 178 on a 50mm guidescope several times and it showed no signs of blocky stars. Larger pixels display blocky stars. The 178 pixels are only 2.4 μm which is tiny.
Blocky stars come from cameras with pixel sizes of around 4μm and above and worse as you get up to the size in cameras like the Xtreme which has 8.4μm x 9.8μm pixels displaying horrific stars.

I have the new 59ed with the better dovetail,, which makes life easier,, will be doing a bit of working out to get my two guide scopes mounted, shotgun style and use the orion for guiding and 50ed as main scope. Same as you Again too many bits of equipment not being used,, think I'm going to end up using the star adventurer with Canon 5d and a lens,, Swap my evostar ed80 to my eq3 Pro and esprit to the heq5

Been looking at ways to mount the 50 Ed to the azgti,, now that part is easy,,, just clamp it's dovetail,, But I'm left with the orion finder guider and it has a finder bracket,, and I would need to 3d print bits, drill and tap bits,,, buying brackets would hit £100 + and still not do the job,, I don't want to messing around in the dark with complicated builds at the end of the day,, I want a decent setup that looks professional.
Set up the dual telescope saddle and fitted the 50ed and camera on it and it looks decent,,practical,, and came to the conclusion that a second 50ed would be the way to go,, One with a dslr and second with the 178 on it,, the way the weather is,, I could get one soon and possibly get out before the lighter nights creep up on us
Think it would be something outwith the normal set ups.
Video tripod Azgti and wedge in eq mode Asiair Pro and eqmod cable 50ed and a dslr 50ed and a zwo 178mc Sw 17amp battery pack 10" tablet
All the kit can be pulled apart and used with other kit,, so nothing would be a waste of money.
