Looks great Phil, especially considering you were only 10-15 degrees above a streetlight! Your stars are pretty sharp! Try a longer integration and see if you can pick up the outer shape of the nebula (some people call them 'the wings'). When you say you tried 'on/off', what did you turn on and off?

ty Dman... the on.off was the sharpness setting.. this was 1st nite with it cleaned up collimatied telescope.. i didnt do a purfect alignment. just eyeballed it.. but i can see diff from when i 1st got it to this image..
yeah if i went longer exp. it would have blown out. with the lights and stuff around. i wont say what weather tonite is to be like cough lol ... so might get dark spot tonite.. but for fast setup.. cant complain to much lol

Yeah M42 is well know for blowing the core out at longer exposures, but you have to do that to see the outer wings. That's why everyone just blows it out As you see here on a couple of my M42 screen grabs at 30 seconds and 50 seconds, the core is badly burnt out, but the wings show up good. It's a matter of what you want to look at or show people. Show them the Trapezium stars in the centre at short integration, then step it up and show the outer wings even though the core id burnt out. You have just shown them what is in there Best of both worlds.
