Hi, On a moonless night this is what I see when I step outside my front door. As you can see, the exposures are short as stationary tripod shots.
Different time, same view with a Nikon D600. The main SCO is just visible low down centre-maybe a red light and a circular TV antenna just visible. Clear Skies... Shevill

Yes Chris, we certainly do have it good down here. But not just Australia. Many South Americans and South Africans have amazing dark skies too. Some of the best Astrophotography I have seen comes from locations in Chile. They are truly spectacular images Shevill. We are spoilt, and I'm happy about that Here is a photo of my sky: (Canon 350d, 20 seconds. Sign illuminated by my car's parking lights parked 100 metres away) I kept the exposure short to reproduce what my sky looks like on a Moonless night with an unaided eye. and this explains what is visible naked eye: (NGC 5128 Centaurus 'A' Galaxy is right on the edge of the human visible limit of 6.8) You are all welcome to come on down and see our sky. any time

I have also over the years built three outdoor workshops, catteries, chicken houses as well as two observatories. Note your measurements are in feet?, mine are in (metres) yards. When I married and lived in Leeds, we had a small ground floor flat but a big garden. One of the things that appealed to me moving to Tasmania was that houses and land (space) was no object, with 5 & 20 acre plots a regular thing. I think average Australian houses are listed as the largest in the developed world. Our main bathroom is as big as our main living room at my parents detached house outside Leeds. Amazing when I see such on TV and see the huge difference. Yes, I make the most of what we have and say a silent "Thank You" every day to be able to live as we do.
These are some shots I take from time to time sitting outside having a morning cuppa. We have a regular visit twice a day and their antics are hilarious, as well as the noise they make. There is one who circles the house to let us know he has arrived and to put the sunflower seeds out. picasaweb.google.com/109921669020426367250/NativeBirds?authuser=0&feat=directlink
Clear Skies,

Clear Skies,
Shevill Sulphur Crested Cockatoo Solar Eclipse. Thats the problem over here, developers buy a plot of land and cram as many house's as possible in it, they're no bigger than a prison cell these days, garages no bigger than a matchbox and if you want to move to London you can forget it the house prices are out of the reach of joe public. There was a article on MSN that a garage was up for sale with a asking price of £500,000 and some daft bugger will buy it

And thanks for the map Im desperate to see something like this! Ive never even seen the milky way… Im gonna try and make more of an effort to travel to a dark site this year! You guys are so lucky!!! Ive been trying to gauge what 'mag' my skies are. Using the star Alcor (next to Mizar) as a guide…i can only see it when conditions are good. So its like 50% of the time when its clear. Thats a mag 4 star apparently. So conclusion is my skies are crap haha!
