Jdbastro has posted a new Video into You Tube and it is way better than the Image Intensifier that he used to use.
Check this out. Using a Gen 3 Image Intensifier, a Sony A7 camera and Sky90 scope @ f4.5.
You can't get any more 'Live' than this. When it gets to 0:44 seconds you can see just how 'Live' it is!

Are the flashes artifacts of the device or are they stray photons (like from upper atmosphere cosmic ray collisions)?

It is called 'scintillation' Rick, and is an effect of the device. Many people don't like it, but it doesn't bother me. If you want absolute 100% LIVE, you have to put up with anything that makes it possible Scintillation: A faint, random, sparkling effect throughout the image area. Scintillation, sometimes called “video noise,” is a normal characteristic of microchannel plate image intensifiers and is more pronounced under low-light conditions. www.usnightvision.com/VideosandTutorial.aspx
