Last night I spent a couple of hours finding and taking photo's of Greg's Halo star by M17. Despite my best efforts I could NOT confirm his finding. The link is to my Flicker account with all Pics. Patrick Gregs M17 June 4, 2014

Yes Pat, I too have taken an interest in Greg W's mysterious Ring or halo. I have 4 photos to show. 1. A comparison of the stars between Greg's image (ring visible) and the Sinbad collection of images (no ring visible) 2. Then an image of the star with Greg's Ring from DSS (Digital Sky Survey). No ring visible in this old image. 3. Then an image of the same star from NASA 2MASS. No ring visible in this old image. 4. and finally the same star in Infrared using the IRAC (Infrared Array Camera) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Notice how the star that is barely visible in the other images is a massive Infrared Beast in this image, and Infrared also shows up some trailing gas, but still not in a Ring shape around the 'Greg' star: It would be great if it could be confirmed but we would need to know exactly what filter Greg had on his Mallincam at the time, if any. His object might be only visible in Infrared, Ultra Violet, OIII, or any combination. Or only with an unfiltered chip.

Thanks Patrick Gregs M17 June 4, 2014An Update, last night I used the CCD cam (SBIG 8300C) on star HR6858. Took 75 45 sec exposures, yielded 42 that I stacked and processed with Nebulosity SW. Still no Halo or Ring. Will continue to watch for a few weeks...I have Raw stack file (FITS) if anyone wants to try other post processing. ONE INTERESTING FINDING.... The star in question has almost a black background around it. Most of the other stars in the FOV have something showing (other faint stars, hot pix...) which leads me to believe something is there, I just can not see it (yet).... I have heard from GregW about what filters etc he used.
"My images where taken using a 14.5" native F3.3 Newtonian, MallinCam Universe, Bin 2X2, Gain at 22.0, Exposures 120 seconds, no filter.
Using ManyCam at Res 1280x960, and NSN at Res1280x720"
Notice Greg says 'No Filter' so it will be sensitive in the Infrared.
Greg has also asked me this:
"Please give credit to Mark in Temecula for being the 1st to spot this object during my Broadcast on NSN"

Thanks, Good to know some of the details. I will pull the Deep sky filter on my next attempt. My setting are close to Greg's but not exact.
8300 C in 3 X 3 bin, 11 CPC at F4, 45 sec (stacked if needed), Deep Sky Filter to be removed....
Thanks Patrick

Good luck Pat. Dwight had a go at it tonight. Here's a screen grab from his attempt on NSN. Dwight had no filter in so he was picking up any IR which is evident in the amount of faint pink/red nebula showing up in the FOV, but still no ring:
The small faint fuzzy just lower right of centre was spotted in Stellarium by Dean here in Australia, so it isn't anything new and exciting

So how many views of this object has happened? Any more than just the one?
