Well there goes another several hours of wasted due to complete an utter useless weather forcasts! All the forecasts were saying it was clear tonight BBC included so I get everything set up only to find yet again they were talking rubbish! Tomorrow the forecast is cloudy, I won't set up and I bet it's clear all friggng night!!!
Time for a new hobby!

Yes Karl, same as our weather reports lately. I even go into the live weather Radar and satellite which shows it raining quite heavily here last night yet when I looked outside it was a totally clear night and a full sky of stars. I didn't set up and broadcast because the Live Radar weather map showed even heavier rain heading my way. It stayed clear all night!!!!
How can that be???

Yea the weather forcasts in the last few years have been random, I tend to stick to Sat24 satellite pics. You were able to phone the Met Office direct awhile back to get a forcast but dont know if they still do that. On a lighter note I can highly recommend one of these,

On a lighter note I can highly recommend one of these, Where can I buy one of those weather stones? Is there a detailed DIY write-up somewhere? I think it's raining here now but I'd like to be able to confirm my observation.

I use a combination of 2 iPhone apps. First one is just the default one that comes on the phone... i think it takes it from yahoo. Seems to give a very accurate hourly forecast. But only for that day. And another one called 'World Radar' It seems to be pretty accurate but the good thing is it gives you a 10 day hourly forecast. But to be honest... its not hard to predict that it will rain 90% of the time

I have loads of apps on weather and regularly check the BBC and SAT24 but the problem I find is they nearly always give different forecasts! I might look into this weather station Davy or I'm going to get one of those advertising balloons. I'll have have it floating high above the house with a decent cam attached!

Lbd, I have to say impressive setup. You must also have some serious time on your hands..LOL I would attempt something like that, but I live in the suburbs, so the roll off roof is not allowed. Nor is any other structure other than the house. I have no option right now but to drag out my equipment each night. One day when I move to a more friendly location, the first thing I'm doing is building a roll off roof observatory with a warm room ( I like to get out of the house, It keeps me married, LOL)

Now what I would give to get stuck into a project likes this! I think this is the goal for all astronomers but alas not possible for most! One day when I have the right property, some time to spare and a few more spondoolies I'll definitely be building my own astro sanctuary! Thanks for posting

I'm surprised that there is an absolute interdiction re. a simple Ro-Ro observatory? A SHED plus "Pergola" - In the UK... Euthemistically dubbed a "Barbecue Area"? I would genuinely urge *Video Astronomers* to consider the (positive) aspects of (remote) Video Astronomy? I have (on limited budget!) "overspent" on a pre-built 10' x 6' observatory! <sigh> Bur perhaps a more modest *automated* Structure?! But I do see VIDEO Astronomy as "Bringing Astronomy to the Masses"? Breaking the mold of "traditional imaging"? Me? Still optimising collimation of a budget F4 Newt... Overall - UK Weather is still "fairly rubbish"? Sadly, currently... Almost a given!

Thanks for posting The seed for this project was planted in the 1980's. Back then automated observatories required the resources of a university. Not so anymore. Basic remote control is easily within the reach of anyone with a Mallincam and modern mount. The rest can be added one step at a time. I don't like to think of my observatory as a sanctuary. That suggests being cloistered alone, out in the dark. I prefer to think of this kind of astronomy as a way of bringing people together. You can't share much when you're alone.
