How often do you guys do this? For the last 6 months my visual observing has been limited to only my 2 alignment stars lol. But last night when i was playing with the new scope i didn't care about the lx90 so had the camera in the 70ed and just my eyepiece in the lx90. When i went to jupiter i had to go outside to change focus a bit. Then i started looking through the eyepiece...WOW just WOW... never seen jupiter like that before! It was amazing in the 25mm... then i put in the 12mm and it was just breath taking! Was the first time seeing jupiter in a decent scope visually. It looked incredible! GRS could be seen so easily. I dont think its possible any camera could compare to that view! Was very impressed! I did have a look at m42 in the eyepiece for the first time too...was nice... but to be honest just a grey colourless smudge with a few dark bits When it gets a bit warmer outside i may be inclined to do more visual on the moon and planets!

Only once a month on Club nights Chris, and then only if the sky is clear. If the sky isn't clear on club nights it could be months and months until look into an EP.
The reason I do this is to share some time with other visual members of the club at their scopes, and to keep my eye in practice. I still get a buzz out of 'seeing it with my own eye'. Although I prefer to do video.
So, in short, I do Visual about one night a month.

M42 looks awesome with my 10" dob. It just about takes up the whole fov of the eyepiece when using a 32mm 70° eyepiece that gives me about 1.8°. You can see some color around the trapezium too. Andromeda is another that's outstanding too with its dust lanes. Markarian's chain is a beauty. It pretty cool to sit there and count more galaxies in fov than you have fingers on your hands.
That's why I bought a 10" goto dob.

I'll admit that I don't do a lot of visual anymore but I do occasionally trot out my 8" dob and, when I do, I really enjoy it. Star clusters are beautiful when viewed through the dob. There's just nothing like those icy white little star dots and the sense of being "lost in space" when using my ES 82* eyepieces. I just can't get the same experience when doing av. Unfortunately, I'm lazy and, more often than not, I just haul one scope out most nights. When I do, it's usually my 6SE av set up.
