Well, not a new camera but new to me Here's my first attempt stepping up from my 350d to the 450d after about 12 year break from using DSLR's Tarantula Nebula and surrounds in the Large Magellanic Cloud3 x 120 second light frames stacked in Sequator Processed in Photoshop CS5: (Exposure slightly raised, Black level reduced in Levels, and saturation lowered) Focus was slightly out but I'm pretty happy with this first result

Here's my second This one took a bit longer because it is a composite in HDR made up of many differing exposure lengths to prevent burnout in the core: M42 Orion NebulaExposures: 1x2 sec, 1 x 5 sec, 1 x 10 sec, 1 x 20 sec, 1 x 40 sec, 1 x 60 sec, 1 x 90 sec, 1 x 120 sec Stacked in EasyHDR, processed in Photoshop CS5: (Contrast, Guassian Blur, Sharpen) Still plenty of noise

. . . and one for tonight, in between bursts of cloud and a massively speeding Jetstream Carina Nebula (NGC3372) 4 x 60 seconds, stacked in Sequator, PhotoShop (Levels, sharpen, Crop)

Had another go at Carina tonight. The sky was a bit crappy with a thin high mist and bushfire smoke, but the final result was still pleasing 4 frames at 60 sec each, stacked in Sequator, raised Exposure and reduced saturation in Photoshop. I like this one more than the one above from a month ago

Great shots Ken.Lots of detail and nothing over 10 mins total. I missed those images in early Feb.That composite of Orion impresses me. None of the whiteout of the bright parts that I get with my usual 10sec x 18 stacks. I would like to learn how to do that. Looks like a steep learning curve though.
For the 120 sec exposures ,are you guiding ?..Those shots are on your newt ? What is your setup at the moment.? cheers Paul

I could teach you in about 15 minutes. I often attempt guiding but my PHD2 software won't play fair and makes the stars look worse so all my images are without guiding. I just don't stack any frames with egg-shaped stars All the shots in this thread are with the 150mm f/5 Newt. Another new one from the other night Sombrero Galaxy - M1044 frames x 120 seconds (to keep it under 10 minutes total) Needs to be captured again on a night without mist and bushfire smoke. It has really killed the detail.

Here's tonight's efforts. I still need to brush up on my processing. I'm getting rusty Ringtail Galaxies (aka Antennae Galaxies) and Centaurus 'A' Galaxy

We have terrible weather here in Oz at the moment which means no astronomy for a while, so I reprocessed my M42 HDR image above because I wasn't happy with it. Here's the re-processed version

I thought the first one was good ,Ken. It has a lot of detail.
Yep, the weather has been terrible. Hoping for a few clear nights

The new version looks cartoonish as I was too heavy on the noise reduction and it has smeared details to look like a painting or a cartoon Agh! the things we do when it rains

Hi Ken Don't often open up the forum – just too lazy to go through the login routine I guess – so I've only just looked at your M42 image and Wow! It's a great image and you certainly captured the faint grey outer fan very well. I did a 2 panel mosaic (using 4 sec and 8 sec exposures) a little while ago which, although quite colourful, got nothing like the extent of the outer fan seen in yours. So I thought it might be fun to combine the two to see what resulted. I hope you don't mind but I've attached the result here as well as my original image. Certainly the combined result is a great improvement over my original image. Now I see how I can cheat and snaffle the good parts of other people's images and pass them off as my own!

These images show me just how much there is to learn.Great images Southern and Ken. cheers Paul
edit :Had a quick look at the moon tonight with the lx90 10". No cameras. I had to clean the scope and get rid of the spiders first. Dont get it out much . Use this for the moon and planets.

Nah, I don't mind David. Many people do collaborations with their images and processing Your result looks great! As far as logging in to the forum, I don't log out. That way I just click on the bookmark up top of my browser and it opens
