My zwo asi178 mc developed some Really big dust bunnies, and like most, I tried cleaning the glass covering the sensor only to find the dust bunnies are on the inside of the glass sensor side.
I had thought there were small Allen bolts in the four small holes in the back of the camera,, they are actually none 😁
It's the front end that unscrews,, unscrewed it and the protection glass is just held in place by the two half's and a sponge around the sensor.
I cleaned the glass using screen wipes and micro fibre cloth,, Looked dirty when I removed it, so just need to test it and see if it's OK.

That's a bad design if the dust can get in BEHIND the cover glass. That's why it's there! To keep dust out!!

Absolutely no idea how it got there,, the only good point there is,, it was easy to strip and clean, But to pay nearly £400 for it at the time I got it really annoyed me,, you would think it would have rubber seals or gaskets to keep it dust free,

I hope your images are bunny free The 178 is a fantastic camera. Used mine again tonight, until the fog killed the night

To go the route of tracking I need to use the 178 as my guide camera for the meantime,, was a bit of a plonker,, I thought I might have been able to use my qhy5l,, unfortunately only a zwo camera or dslr can work with the asiair Pro,, Starting to go dark and increasing exposure level as it goes to test the camera,, so far so good

put the 178 on the rasa last night. First night for over a month. M77 20s x 9. It is a bit small. Still prefer the 290 for galaxies but it has a big dust bunny. M42. 10s x 18. Hadnt taken an image of good old Orion nebula so far this summer.I like the colour that comes with the 178. I put it on the ED 72 to get a shot of M42 but stuffed up the back focus and everything showed up very blurred. cheers Paul

Thanks Ken. I now have the sw ed72 piggybacked on the rasa so tonight I put the 178 on the ed72 to compare M42 with that image on the rasa. The scope was pointing at ngc 1365 and M42 must have been just on the meridian at about 10pm.I am not sure what the EQ6-R was trying to do but it turned itself upside down and banged the 2 scopes against the tripod. I think it was trying to do a meridian flip but it went horribly wrong. So that has just ended the night. Could have been worse. No damage done. cheers Paul

That's weird Paul, my mount did the same thing last night! I was using Cartes du Ciel to GoTo through Synscan WiFi and when I asked it to go to M42 it did a complete upside down twist with a half pike and double somersault and tangled the cables around the tripod leg and jammed with a growling sound First time it's ever done that! Like you, M42 was at the Meridian when it happened. Very weird!!! After a new 3 star alignment I left Cartes du Ciel out of the loop and used Synscan WiFi on its own and all went well again.

Now that is weird. The EQ6-R is usually spot on. Both of us were using synscan wifi. I havent had a problem with synscan for a couple of years.
cheers

M42 on the zwo 178 again. This time using the Esprit 80 on the HEQ5. Tracking is not the best on my Heq5. 27sec exposure x 18 stack with the starizona apex ed .65 focal reducer. This takes the f5 esprit 80 to f3.2 which is pretty fast for a refactor. It takes the focal length from 400 to 260. I like the colour on the 178 cheers Paul
