Yeah Yeah, I know it's about 13 years old, but I just bought a Canon 450d When you live on a pension you can't be lavish on purchases Way back, before my Video Astronomy days, I used to do Astrophotography with a Philips Toucam Pro and a Canon 350d. But now that I am slightly stepping back into AP I can't use either camera with Windows 10 So, wanting to stick with Canon, the 1st one on the list that works in Win10 using BYEOS, Canon Utilities, etc is the 450d, so I went hunting for one and found one for $170. I ordered it I also ordered a new AC adaptor for it ($30) and ordered a 2" nosepiece ($38). Once they all arrive it should be close to New Moon again, ready for nice dark skies Also going to purchase Backyard Eos. For Image capture and total camera control I used to use ImagesPlus (which is now free) but it is waayyyy too complicated to use easily. So I am converting to BYEOS.

Had food poisoning once, don't want to repeat that one, I tend to frazzle my food to make sure it's cooked. Hope you are feeling better Davy.

Good shout Ken, I Was my first Canon dslr,, I gave it to Carol when I got my Canon 600d cameras,, I actually got a modded 450d as well, Davy, do you think the mod is worth doing? I read mixed opinions and see mixed results all over the net.

I'm same as you,, mixed opinion,, If you need it to take photos of faces and places,, leave it,, if it's just for astronomy then , is it worth the extra cost to mod,, I know folk do them themselves, but I don't have steady hands to do that.. Images I've took definitely are more brown in colour and need less exposure

Images I've took definitely are more brown in colour and need less exposure It's only for Astro davy. I have the 350d for happy snaps of the family but I use my phone for that anyway. My phone takes better pics than my 350d. I have read articles that say the Mod isn't worth it unless you image a lot of emission nebula. For other objects it's not necessary or much of a benefit. And some of these comments come from top Astrophotographers. But a lot of ordinary occasional Astrophotographers swear by it. Who should I believe? As in cost, I would do it myself, that's not a problem. I just wonder if it's worth the effort considering post processing can pull out as much detail as you want. If there's no MAJOR advantage I may as well leave it stock and worry about it in the future if I get the urge

Thanks for the help.

Ken
I bought a dirt cheap, barely used 450d just before Christmas. Other than a few test shots, I haven't used it yet but have done the mod - following the Gary Honis instructions. Didn't work when I put it back together, but found I just hadn't plugged in one of the myriad of connectors fully. I wouldn't be game to do it with a more expensive camera.
I think it's worth it for Ha-containing nebulae. I don't have a before and after comparison - though I did it in the past with a 550d and the improvement was dramatic. Better sensitivity for those red emissions.
But some prefer the colour balance of unmodded cameras.

Thanks Chris. Yeah, the unmodded image colour does look better. I have watched the Gary Honis video and read his website and it is very descriptive. I am hoping I don't have to do it. I'll see how my images come out and if I am happy with them I will leave it unmodded.
My old Astrophotography pics are with an unmodded 350d and I like the results from that camera but this 450d should be even better as it has less noise and better resolution.
This is an example of the results I used to get with my 350d (detail lost because of You Tube quality)
