Hey guys, I randomly get emails from some astronomy shop i bought something off ages ago. He sends out random updates on all things astronomy. I just got an email saying there is a HUGE sunspot now facing the earth. 4 times the size of earth apparently. He said there is a 80% chance of 'M-flares' and a 50% chance of 'x-flares' whatever that means. Might be worth a look if you are able

Hi Chris, its true, there is a huge sunspot facing us at the moment and it is very active. With respect to the flares, M class can be incredibly powerful, but X class can be incredibly deadly. Its the X class flares that could cause the damage to our magnetic field and potentially be fatal to us if strong enough and if they head in our direction. They are also responsible for the magnificent Aurora Borealis displays that we get way up north.
