Hi all,
Just thought i would give a brief review on my LX90.
I bought a used 8" LX90 back in the summer from someone i found on gumtree. I seen it advertised for a pretty fair price of £600 which included some nice accessories too. The next day i went to have a look at it. It turned out this was one of the early models. Around 8 years old. So that meant it didnt have L.N.T(Level North Technology), GPS or ACF (advanced coma free) that the new models come with. I was expecting this though as i knew the new models cost much much more than 600 quid. Example from one of the few Meade importers in the UK www.telescopehouse.com/acatalog/Meade_LX90ACF_8___UHTC_Telescope-2.html
Anyway i checked everything out and was very happy with the condition. The woman i bought it from seemed shocked when i told her i use the telescope in my garden. She didnt think they could be used outside. She said it had never moved from her livingroom and had only ever been used to look over the river at the pretty hills hahaha
It came with a full set of brand new Meade 4k eyepieces. Just seemed too good a deal to miss so i had to buy it
Instantly loved it! Such a big difference from the wee ETX125. The tripod is huge even at its lowest setting and incredibly sturdy. The whole thing seems rock solid and is pretty damn heavy to carry when all setup. But for me it still qualifies as a 'grab and go' scope as it sits all setup in the house and is carried out in one go when the clouds allow.
Aligning the scope really is very easy! Even without the fancy new features that come with the new models i can place the scope down and be fully aligned in under 2 minutes. 1: Point scope north, 2: Level the OTA, 3: Enter date and time, 4: Pick two star alignment (i always use Mizar and Vega), 5: You are now aligned and ready to view the heavens. If you find the alignment is slightly off just centre an object in the eyepiece and hold down 'Enter' for 2 seconds to sync the new position.
The GOTO accuracy seems spot on though! I have left an object in a 12mm eyepiece for over 2 hours came back and it was exactly where i left it. The slew speed when you change object is so fast! It zips across the sky in seconds and is actually very quite. Doesn't make a sound when tracking an object. Unlike other scopes ive had.
The views seem amazing when compared to what i had with the ETX125. Example would be M13...With the ETX i could resolve around 5-10 stars at best. With the LX90 i can easily resolved 20+ stars.
So all in all i was very happy with my purchase! This is the third Meade telescope i have owned and they have not disappointed me once! The Autostar hand controller is super easy to use. In my opinion the LX90 is a good example of a truly well made and reliable piece of kit!
For me this fits my needs perfectly. Super quick setup with accurate tracking and goto.
