Something I quickly put together to give a brief look at the results using the HDR (High Dynamic Range) feature in Miloslick Video Capture Software with a MallinCam Xterminator
The HDR feature is really easy to use and gives great results. Simply set the camera to it's lowest Hyper setting, which is 3 seconds in the Xterminator and Xtreme, and start integrating (I forgot this part, about starting the integrating at 3 seconds, in my video as you will see)
Use the Histogram and brightness/contrast etc to set the 3 second integration view to where you want the brightest part of the object to be (in M42's case, get the trap as clean as possible).
Then select High Dynamic Range, choose how many 'stops' you want to go (I suggest +2 until you get used to it) and how many frames to match how far in integration you want to go. Numbers under the 'stops' box will tell you how many seconds each frame will go for. Be sensible here. Don't choose settings that make the longest frame too long or the faint parts will start to blow out. get the highest number to be similar to what you know the object usually looks good at (33 seconds, 56 seconds etc).
Once you start integrating, the HDR function will start at your shortest chosen time (I use 3 seconds), and it will build from there using the increasing numbers (seconds). Sit back and watch it grow.
In my video below I use M42 as an example of how to set it up and show the results. I hope it helps.

Thanks for posting this Ken.
Have you somehow managed to show the trap's stars whilst showing the gas nebula?
Can you integrate for less than 3 secs in HDR?

Yes Howard, when I played with the HDR feature when using an ED80 refractor it showed the trap stars in the view, and at the end of the stack. The 6" Achro sucks in more than 3 times the light than the ED80 so the trap was slightly blown out at 3 seconds. In the ED80 it shows the individual stars.
3 seconds is the lowest setting that Hyper goes down to. The reason is because you need to use Hyper to do the longer frames, and 3 seconds is the lowest setting in Hyper. If it could go lower I'd use it. The simple fix is a smaller scope like an ED80.
