hi folks. have recently bought a canon 450d to upgrade from my 400d, the 450d has live view mode and was wanting to use this for astrophotography the 400d I had struggled to focus in on stars ect through it's view finder, the live view I found out can be used via a cable to the laptop and use the eos software, I have now tried this and it will be great for astrophotography and to a point will be ok for video, what im going to aim for is use the video out and attatch this to the video grabber and use the video software to tweek the image coming into the laptop..unfortunately I got the wrong cable. will update when I get correct cable

Hi shevill. I saw in your image of your set up you have an adapter fitted to your external flash hot shoe..what was it for if you dont mind me asking Hi Davy, It is an electronic cable release. I have them for all my DSLR's, some are wired, some are wireless. All bought on eBay- Hong Kong sources at very realistic prices.
Interestingly, Canon do not make a cable release for the 450D but third party makers do, so I have several types to suit what I am doing. The 350D & 450D are long time obsolete but are actually perfect sensors for astro work due to their pixel sizes and well depths, which is why I have three of them modified, the latest 450D is now a Peltier cooled monochrome (de-Bayered) so all pixels are used for luminence and resolution. picasaweb.google.com/109921669020426367250/SCOJanuary2015?authuser=0&feat=directlink Regards,
Shevill

What frustrates me is I can't find any way to get my 350d to work with my Win7 laptop. I have read all sorts of work-arounds but the amount of detail to get it working is mind-boggling for a Computer illiterate person like me. And just running it in XP compatibility mode didn't work It doesn't even like downloading its images to my laptop. I had to trick it into believing it is a USB memory stick before it would let me get the images off it! and even that doesn't work every time and canon have been asked numerous times to release a driver for Win7 and 8 but they refuse to. There's no benefit in it for them, so they won't.

hi allan, i have a few remotes for the canon's, i have a simple shutter remote and a more advanced timer controller, the 450d i bought has the extra grip/battery pack and its a pro version with a built in timer controller as well. done a test this morning ,i have the mini usb cable that goes in camera with rca on other end,i fixed this up to my usb grabber and it wont recognise camera with sharpcap or the prog i got with my easycap dongle,,,only option now is the av jack on camera to rca and connect to dongle for to be able to adjust video feed into laptop. dont get me wrong you can capture straight to computer via the mini usb to eos remote software,,,davy

I will try my 350D on my Win 7 laptop, I will load the Canon software. I also use Backyard EOS but cannot remember if it all works with Win 7. For most astro software I still use XP SP3 on many of my astro PC's, which works well and still has drivers for many older bits of gear I have collected over the years. Also another camera control software for DSLR's is APT.
Get back to you with an answer soon.
Regards, Shevill

Thanks Shevill. Yes XP works well for all Astro software and hardware. Win7 not so much. I don't have any XP machines any more
