Is a 70mm APO an upgrade? For a while now ive been considering buying a small APO to piggyback ontop of the lx90. I have just bought some scope rings to attach it. I have a 70mm Celestron travel scope i can use untill i buy something 'real'. Im looking at something like this www.astrobuysell.com/uk/propview.php?view=76076 They only cost 300 quid brand new. But im wondering if this is even worth it? Will the views i get be an improvment using a 70mm APO over a 8" SCT? For the huge objects that dont fit in my FOV with the SCT it would work nice. But what about other random objects like M27 or something? Also any idea if my old lx90 will handle the extra 2kg? Currently the tracking seems to be perfect i would hate to screw up my whole setup. I do have a counter weight system that some dude off astrobuysell gave me for nothing lol but would rather not go down that route if possible.

Chris, Yes. It is definately an upgrade from your LX90.
But remember that it is only 70mm. For the same amount, or possibly even less, you could go up to ED80 which is semi-Apo. The 70mm will give a wider FOV though.

Yes mate i have considered the ED80 however its just too big and long. At the very least it would look stupid sitting ontop of the SCT Also im pretty sure its a good bit heavier. I do like the looks of this Starwave thing...just wish it came in blue to match the Meade lol

Whats the intended use..to mount on your lx90 mount or another mount. What about a camera/ slr lens configuration fixed to a scope mount on the lx90..or a watec 902h 1/2" mono cam to a 9×50 finder scope, would keep the weight down ..allways fancied the cheeky wee williams scope..me id go twin cameras on a bracket with two different lenses would defo look at a watec 902.

Davy its to piggyback on the lx90. Im avoiding going down the new mount route for as long as i can! And I've not had the lx90 long and not looking to replace it.
I have thought about the camera / slr lens route but i really want a ED refractor and this seems the cheapest way of getting one. Plus can be used visually on the odd occasion when on holiday or something.

I have the ed80 and I think its a brilliant scope..only one criticism I have is the focusser it needs adjusted now and again due to slippage with a camera on it regularly. .the wee red williams optics scope took my fancy but I went with the cencus and got the ed80 instead ..its a heavy scope dont know how it compares against the Williams..but if I had the option of a second scope the Williams would be a big contender...davy

Wow, 65mm is getting really small! Not going to be much different than a good quality Finderscope in light gathering and Focal length. Only difference would be the quality of the glass. I would have thought 70mm was starting to get a bit small and now you are asking about even smaller scopes But, I had a search around the net for VisionKing scopes and everything I read was positive (except for a negative about the focuser on one scope). According to what I read, for their price, the quality is very good. It is an ED, not a true Apo, but as a triplet that is good. Scopes like the ED80, ED100 & ED120 are only Doublets.

Yeh i was thinking that too 65mm being too small. My finder scope is 50mm lol. Like you i done some digging on the visionking scopes and it seems people really like them! They also come under the name Barska. Dudes in the US were picking them up for $300...for a triplet!! It seems the focuser isnt great but optics are excellent. Im actually still very tempted... 65mm triplet, 8-24 zoom, diagonal, 6.5mm eyepiece all for £300. Some people are saying it competes with thier 100ED and outperforms the 80ED with the only limitation being its poor under a full moon. Here is a thread from CN forum about them www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/3558394/page/0/view/collapsed/sb/5/o/all/fpart/1/vc/1

Here's a review on it: www.absoluteastronomy.co.uk/2012/11/sky-watcher-equinox-66-pro.htmlIt is a doublet. But the review seems to boast excellent optics regardless. I always have a laugh when I read a telescope ad saying never used or only used once or twice. What amuses me about statements like that is that it makes it sound like telescopes wear out slightly each time you look through them, and these unused, or slightly used ones, haven't been worn out yet by being over-looked-through I mentioned this in another forum years ago, asking about how much does an observing Beam from our eye wear out a lens, and how many Moon Photons does it take to wear the mirror down, and no-one saw the humour in what I was saying. It is like saying each telescope is only good for something like 12,000 views But to make a long story short, it sounds like a good Buy Chris.

I didnt realise the the ED80 had so many different focal lengths.... i thought they were all the same... 700mm or something...i seen one in the flesh a while back and it looked massive. After looking about there seems to be loads of different options in terms of how long they are.
