I've been searching the net for the most suitable lens for my sky cam. I am using Computar 2.3mm F1.4 at the moment, but wanted something slightly faster and wider. So after much searching for an ideal lens I found this. Wider, faster and damned expensive. Shipping rates are extortionate and then there are duties to be paid. www.123securityproducts.com/tg2010fcs-lg.html
This will have to go on the wish list I think.

This will have to go on the wish list I think. Hi,
This seems to be a common complaint-the excessive freight costs by some suppliers. It is how they make a bigger profit, or advertise an item below what the market usually lists it for, but makes up the price difference in the freight costs.
I recently received a fairly large parcel from New Orleans, deep south USA, containing a Mallincam SSI-L Digital Camera plus, 3m USB cable, adapters, DVD etc, USPS International Priority $45, which seems from experience to be a pretty standard charge for a smallish package.
I just received a quote from Supercircuits in Texas for a tiny video camera not that much bigger than a big thumb, $139 + $99 freight! . I have written back to them and explained that they have lost a sale due to their overcharging on freight, and quoted my Mallincam experience.
Sadly, Australia is seen as a rich country and we get ripped off one way or another, as you well know. China, Taiwan, Malaysia etc on the other hand are keen to do business and keep their freight costs to a minimum or in many cases free.
It will be interesting to see what sort of response I get, if any from Supercircuits!

Yes, that was what I was thinking Shevill. I mean, how big and heavy can this lens be. At current conversion rates, this is about £60 and I think we have to pay duty on the total cost of the transaction. Trouble is, this seems to be an ideal lens and I haven't found it anywhere else cheaper yet, but the search continues.

I don't mind the wait when it allows me to have the kit at a price I can afford. I mostly I have to wait weeks or longer for gear supposedly in stock in Oz through the normal outlets. But for some gear, the retailer waits until he has enough orders to place an order on the factory/wholesaler - most likely from the same source as I find anyway - and I get charged extra for the wait buying local!!!
Doing that right now with some kit, in stock July, sorry mid to late August, sorry now mid to late October. Oops, winter and the dark nights are disappearing fast. No sign of my mono DSLR from JTW, ordered back in May. I actually spend more time waiting for gear than using it on the skies.

That would be a cheap experiment Johnno. Might be worth testing for the price. I have put a hold on any ebay purchases for a while and even though there may be bargain cameras to be found, they are still no more sensitive than the ones I already have. I could have had a SCB-2001 for £41 today but resisted the temptation, because every penny saved could go towards the new lens I found. It will work out at about £200 with the duty etc, so I need to curb any frivolous spending.
I'm working on the simple principal that if I can't increase the sensitivity of the camera, then I will increase the sensitivity of the lens. The goal is to be able to capture meteors at the lowest integration time possible for a smoother video at 25fps. There are lots of F1.0 lenses available, but they have a narrower fov. This lens will give a bit more and be more sensitive, so its a win win, but at a price.
