Hi, So much hype about the "Super Moon", I could not resist taking a couple of shots, as usual from our from outside our front door. The peaked roof object to the left is my smaller OctaDome observatory, which has a different set of telescopes etc. on a massive EQ mount. Make sure you go to the Picasa link: picasaweb.google.com/109921669020426367250/MathersOctaDomeScopes2006?authuser=0&feat=directlinkWe do have clouds, but apart from these few it was a brilliant night, not much good for anything other than reading a book outdoors! Clear skies... Shevill

Love the dome Shevill, it does not look out of place in your garden, blends in with the surrounding area around it. Does that 3mm insulation foam work ok in winter?

Love the dome Shevill, it does not look out of place in your garden, blends in with the surrounding area around it. Does that 3mm insulation foam work ok in winter? Hi John,
Yes, just, it also helps in warmer weather.
I designed it to fit in with the general scheme of things I have built over the years around the place. With 5-acres one would thing there was heaps of space, but on a rocky hillside most of it is natural rocks and big gum trees etc. many which have 'died' over the years. I have a small Komatzu excavator to do my 'gardening' with and to level sections where I need to build stuff. I have had to do a lot of digging and levelling, which takes up a lot of time on mostly rocky ground.
The inside walls have a layer of it between the metal and the 5 mm MDF sheeting-held in place by the shelves in the middle. Still a bit of inside finishing to do and put some carpet tiles down.
I built it over my 4x4 inspection pit-hence the limited size, but better than leaving the scopes outside just covered up. It is a neat fit for one person but once setup on target I just sit by the computer/TV screen anyway. I built this one close to the house for when I had my knee replacement done, to make life easier. Getting up to my main 4 metre dome is up a steep dirt path between the bushes etc, too difficult with crook knees.
I am often amazed when I read comments that 'the other half won't let me build an obs, or she wants to take the scopes to the tip etc'. I always maintain two people live in the house and its 50/50, otherwise start looking for somewhere else to live! (the other half that is)
Let's face it, I enjoy building stuff. Currently building a big poly green house 6mx4mx3m (20'13'x9') for growing hydroponic veggies etc. a project & a half.
This and a few other projects on the go limit the time for astronomy.
Clear skies... Shevill
