Hi All:
haven't had the luck to attend any stargazing parties much less see anyone else doing video astronomy live. Curious about how you handle night vision protection. I'm in backyard...sit next to scope with MCX PC setup using Miloslick..even on night vision mode and reduced computer brightness, the screen is still bright..when out doing general viewing or still CCD AP images I use my handmade red screen cover..but with live video this interfers with the image so I leave it off
How do you all view images without ruining your night vision, or even your neighbor's night vision at a stargazing party?

Hi Jeff you will probably find at star parties they will issue guidelines on lights etc during the event. Unfortunately monitors will always light up to a degree. The general thing to do probably is to set up away from the visual guys. You will find they will come to you out of interest.
A simple cardboard box cover will help to stop it interfering with others. For your own eyes, believe it or not an eye patch comes in handy when retaining vision for using the finder to get the next object.

Hi Jeff and welcome.
At our Astronomy Camps the majority of attendees are imagers and they all have their laptops on, but they are either placed inside cardboard or plastic boxes as hoods, or are inside small tents. The visual guys don't mind this as it keeps the laptop screens light down.
I set up away from everyone else with my monitors exposed so people can walk up and see the Live views. I make sure my monitors are pointing away from them and I am about 60-80 feet away from them, and I block any light that may go their way.
As far as my own night vision, it doesn't matter because I'm not looking in any eyepieces. Just looking at my monitors.

Thanks for these ideas guys. I've been thinking about this too as our "club" has an event coming up at the end of the month. I'll be the first video setup ever, so of course I asked if having video was going to be ok... Unfortunately I've just gotten crickets in response.

Rick, have a look at this video I made of our Astro camps. You'll see all the small tents around the field for laptops, and when the video gets to night time you'll see people in their tents with their laptops. And there are visual observers all around them:

LOL!! Oh modeling was what that was!
By the way, was that a JDI quadcopter w/ GoPro filming that overhead view?

Yep a GoPro, and the owner was getting a lot of interference in the video from his quadcopter. I don't know what brand Quadcopter though. He has since fixed the problem.
