I am wondering if anyone has experience with a Hauppauge ImpactVCB Video Capture Card (PCI and PCI-Express). Here is a link: www.hauppage.com/site/products/prods_analog.htmlI am especially interested in whether this card will work with UFOCapture software. The reason why I am more interested in a card to be installed inside the computer cabinet is because it seems to me safer than having a USB stick hanging out at the back (with some leverage) which then can easily fall off if someone moves the computer for cleaning or other reasons. Having the S-video cable going from the camera to the ImpactVCB capture card seems to me more robust with little risk for for the connector to fall out. Any feedback is welcomed. Cheers, Toby

Cheers, Toby Hi Toby,
Over the years and in my early days, I used various video capture product from this manufacturer, mainly because they were above average of what was available. I have assorted computers with internal and external capture devices, and there are pros & cons either way. I have 9 PC's that get used in two observatories as well as test machines indoors, so in some ways I need mobile devices rather than locked into several more computers. With external devices it is easy to swap between different machines, as I build my own to suit what I want to do, this is an important factor for me. If only using one PC, then it is a personal choice. If using an external USB type device, connect it the the PC with a short USB cable, then is is not a solid device sticking out and exposed to being knocked etc. One of the reasons I like my Imaging Source little converter boxes, they have a cable into the device to link it to the PC and it sits on the table with the monitor and other switch boxes where I can see & access it.
Note with the ImpactTVB device is its capture rate depending on computer specs, 15-30 FPS, seems a tad slow to me. I have moved to solid state hard drives for video capture because I can capture through USB 3.0 at 1920 x 1080, (one gigabyte per second) standard video 720 x 560 whatever, (30 megabytes per second) still needs a decent machine for reliably capturing without dropping frames. With Hauppauge devices you are paying extra for the TV tuner section you really don't need
Clear skies... Shevill

Toby I use one of these, with 3rd party software www.hauppage.com/site/products/data_usblive2.htmlconcerning if the card is safer than a usb stick or grabber, the input sockets are the same on both the card or grabber so if you snag the cable on the card it will just come out as easy if you was using a usb stick or grabber plus I can swap between laptop or desktop PC John

UFOcapture should work with any grabber or video input. I think they still do a months free trial as well.

Thanks to every1 for your reply. Recently I had a corre correspondence with the developer of UFOCapture (http://sonotaco.com/e_index.html) asking him which card/grabber to use: Original email: Hi SonotaCo, I found this video capture card (ImpactVCB): www.hauppage.com/site/products/prods_analog.htmlDo you think it will work with your UFOCapture software? Reply from SonotaCo: Compatibility on video capture is very complex. The compatibility of UFOCapture is almost same with Microsoft Media Encoder. The point is whether the device driver supports Microsoft DirectShow uncompressed video capture interface or not. Usually, it can be supposed by the hardware type. There are two types in low cost capture equipments. One is so called hardware encoding type, that includes a hardware encoder chip in it. And the other is so called software encoding type, that does not have hardware encoder. Most of hardware encoding type is NOT compatible with UFOCapture, because they usually do not have un-compressed video capture interface on DirectShow. Most of the software encoding type is compatible with UFOCapture. But there is exception always, and we cannot test all devices in the world. So, please test by yourself if you want to use other devices than our recommendation.
