I am posting this in the general board as it is not video.
So I have been looking at producing better images, so I have been looking at higher resolution CCD's. I'm really looking for something in between video and straight up imaging. With Astrolive coming out, I think I am ready to step into hybrid semi live imaging.
I currently guide so longer exposures are no real concern for me. What led me to video was the ability to see objects without stacking tons of subs. But now with this new software Miloslick and astrolive the lines have blurred. Now you can post process on the fly and produce images that are pleasing. This saves tons of time and now brings me to the point of making the move.
I have been looking at several cameras that would fit my needs. I'm not looking for super high poster quality resolution, but would like better than 640x480 for sure. I wont nice round stars and less noise. So far here is my short list:
1: Mallincam Universe
Pros: Color Binning, Sensitivity, Resolution
Cons: Cooling not adjustable, Large format chip (Means my filters/wheel, reducer etc. will not work). EXPENSIVE
2: Atik 2/3" range of cameras (314l etc)
Pros: Smaller chip, decent pixel size, will work with 1.25" accessories, medium range resolution 1360 (H) 1024 (V) approx. 1.40M pixels, much lower cost
Cons: Lower Resolution, Lowers sensitivity
Here is my main concern. I need to have the option of narrow band imaging. My skies just plain suck. So I really hate to have to buy all new filters etc. The Universe is 1895 USD. The reducer is like another 300. Then you add in the price of all new filters and I could buy used car. If I go with a smaller format chip such as the 2/3 or 1/1.8 offered by ATIK, I can use all the same accessories as my mallincam and I save a ton of money.
Also currently the ATIK cameras are supported in Astrolive for live stacking and stretching. The Universe is "Planned".
This will not replace my mallincam, but just a new area I want to explore. I have DSLR imaged in the past and hated it. But these new dedicated CCD's are much more sensitive and easier to use now. So I'm ready to jump back in, as long as I can still view what I'm imaging live or near live.
Please let me know your thoughts, and any suggestions.
