Hi all. Not sure if this should go here since it's not a scope I am using, but have a question about this scope. I am thinking of getting this scope from orion but with the 45 degree diagonal since it's cheaper. my question is this. Is this 'dovetail' a vixon style that I could use on a Celestron SLT mount? On the Orion site it doesn't really say, but does say it has the threading for mounting on a camera tripod.

At a guess I would say yes it is a Vixen/skywatcher type dovetail. It will have an appropriately threaded hole in it for attaching to a camera tripod as well.

Thanks guys for the info. Davy I know for AP this would have lots of CA but I think for Video the CA won't be much of an issue. Just looking at some scope potential, but main thing is a mount with tracking to start with. A used ST80 if I can get one would save money as well.

Hi Rob,
Ive tried a 70mm celestron travel scope with a video camera a while ago. Only on a nearby lamp post tho. But the CA was disgusting! Was like seeing double. (if im right in thinking thats what CA is lol) Ive recently used the 70ED on the same lamp post and the image is perfect. I think if i were in your shoes i would be saving up a bit more and checking the used market for a cheap 80ED scope. In the long run it will be worth it. As if you get hooked it wont be long before you will end up upgrading.

Hi Rob,
As to mode of attachment on the 80T, it has an appx. four inch length of Vixen-style dovetail bar. The ST80-A has a removable cradle/tube rings for 20 bucks more. This latter allows for a little more adjustment for balance. With a cam mounted on it, this might prove to be of value. However, YMMV...
Also, note the 80T has a small 6 X 26 finder while the 80A has an 8 X 40. To me this is a significant difference. Whether the T model comes with a case is unclear. If I were you, I'd save up the extra few bucks and get the 80A.
I'm using the ST80 for Solar before moving on to deep sky. In my limited experience, I've found reducing the monitor setting for Hue (I think it was) eliminated the CA entirely. I have no doubt this will prove true for Lunar and bright planets/stars as well. This is a great little scope for the money, and I'd buy it again if I didn't have one.
Anybody had parallel results with monitor adjustment to eliminate CA?
Bob

Thanks for the info Chris. The ED may be out of my price range.
Davy, no problem mate, just looking at various options.
Bob I know a used ST80 is hard to come by because people buy them up really fast....so it must be an ok scope. I also agree, the A might be the better way to go. I have other finders so it wouldn't be a problem, but yeah the 8x40 would be great.
I love viewing cluster, both open and Globular so the ST80 stands out for me. Again, just looking around and getting info from people.

I'm looking at all options and every bit of info helps, like the monitor settings, thanks Bob. I'm hoping to have what I need by the end of next month...then it will rain 40 days and 40 nights...lol...the curse..
