My son and I just came back inside from watching the Geminids Meteor Shower. Geminids is the best shower each year, and my son always looks forward to it, but we had bad news this morning with the forecast of total cloud cover for tonight Then about 10pm it started to rain, which wasn't forecast. We kept checking the sky every half hour hoping that the peak time of 2am might give us a small break in the clouds. Midnight: Cloud and drizzly rain. 1:00am: Very thick cloud and drizzle. 1:30am: still cloud and drizzle 1:45am: Cloud breaking up and Moon occasionally visible on the western horizon as it was setting. 2:00am: Cloud dissipating!!!! 2:15 am: Not one cloud in the sky!!!!!! and Meteors, bright and white, about every few minutes!!! After the rain we had, and the Moon gone, the sky was clearer than I have seen it for about a year! We sat there in amazement as we saw some great Geminids and occasional Sporadics thrown in as well, all with a stunning Milky Way spread across the background sky . . . WOW!!! 3:30am the cloud returned and we packed it in, very happy Heading out again tomorrow night which should be just as good

Well, the second night wasn't much of an improvement. It was meant to be the best night of the two, but we only saw about 40 meteors between 1:30am and 4:15am. Mind you, the ones we did see were pretty spectacular! Extremely bright like welding flashes, streaking across about a quarter of the sky, and leaving smoke trails The sky was cloudy right up until we set up our reclining chairs at 1:30am and it miraculously cleared. Then at 4:15am when we decided to pack it in the sky immediately clouded over again! THAT'S WEIRD!!!! Oh well, only 12 months until the next Geminids
