Hi guys, Last night i got to use the MFR-5 focal reducer for the first time. Instantly noticed the stars round the edges were not in focus. The stars in the middle were fine. Now i didnt do much testing around spacers etc. So could well be that. However today i decided to give it a wee clean and noticed a couple of things wrong with it. Now i know this is a used reducer but this doesnt look like wear and tear. These look like production issues. I will send the dude i bought it from an email and see if he knows anything. But have a look at this... Dodgy reducer yeh?

The left pic looks like coating failure. The right pic, that is some ugly gluing job.
My guess is he lens came loose and someone glued it back in. As for the coating failure, it looks like someone attempted to clean it with a harsh chemical and damaged the coating.

on second thought, the left pic could just be just gunk or soap residue. try a cotton swab and a 50/50 solution of alcohol and distilled water to see if it comes off. Its really hard to tell from the pics. Well a lot of this would explain the strange vignetting like dark edges and Coma I observed during your broadcast. As you got this almost free as a package deal with your used extreme, I doubt the seller will do much. But it does not hurt to try. Maybe Rock could help you out, he may take it as a trade in for a new one if it's possible this was a production issue. Try all angles

Cheers lads. I was actually reading all these this morning as i faced the issues you mention Hemmi so wanted to know how to use it. After reading how to use it i obviously started playing about with it and the spacers and thats when i noticed the issues.
These pics were taken after a very good clean! The one on the left its like its inside the glass! Its weird... No way it could be caused by cleaning.
And yeh the one on the right is just nasty... it has chips round the edges of the lens too.
I guess i could mail Rock but as its used its not really his problem.

looking at the one on the left it looks like you can unscrew the retaining ring, might be worth a go and take it out and see if you can clean it, just have to make sure to put it back the right way

A wee update on this.... So i randomly decided to send Rock an email showing him this reducer.... Well...what can i say... the guy is a legend! I was completely honest and told him this was bought along with the mcx 'used'. He was angry that someone sold his product in this kind of state and immediately told me to sent him it back. And it would be replaced...with a brand new version all for free!! The only thing better than this guys cameras...is his customer service / support! Absolutely outstanding if you ask me. Ive never came across service like this in my life. Previous to this i had absolutely no loyalty to any vendor. I would just go with whatever is cheapest. But now i will be investing in more Mallincam products. Its clear as day that he puts customer satisfaction ahead of financial gain! I tip my hat to you Sir! The aliexpress vendor who sells the LN300 should take note!!

When you buy one of his cameras, you can be assured you will never have to worry about a warranty. Plus when you buy a camera and a new model comes out, it can be upgraded to that new model for a small fee.

and he also answers any questions in the Mallincam Yahoo Group daily.
What I found out, as a customer of Rock's, is that we aren't just his customers, we are his friends.
Fantastic outcome Chris.

Ken is 100% right and you can NEVER find a better person to deal with and also be your friend at the same time. Rock takes a lot of pride in his works and wants to please all if he can. He has a true strong passion for this hobby and we are all blessed to have him with us.
