Quick review on the ovl focuser upgrade for the skywatcher evostar ed80 black diamond series telescope.
First up,, if you are going to do the upgrade your old stock focuser may be heading for the bin or require a bit of engineering work.
My own focuser I knackered trying to do the skywatcher electric focuser ..
Some nice chap at skywatcher has been glueing on one side of the focus knobs..
So you can't get the single speed knob off,, you may be lucky,, I wasn't.
I took a 4lb hammer to mine and knackered the bearing,, only kidding,, got to laugh because you collapse in a heap and cry your eye's out because you've just knackered a perfectly good scope, 😂,
I was very gently tapping mine and it damaged it,,so be careful ,,if it doesn't move leave it.
So next up was buy the ovl upgrade focuser, £137 delivered.
Broke my bloody heart.
But I'm glad I did in a way,, because the new focuser is bloody worth it..
It's shiney black and looks great,, ruler guide on focal tube , rock solid in the housing compared to the stock junk that was factory fitted ,, it's that good.
The focuser can rotate, and lock in various positions,,so no messing about trying to move scope in it's rings ect.
Beautiful motion in and out ,,
Fantastic bit of kit,
Well worth the money,
Just made a great scope fantastic.
Now getting off the old one
NIGHTMARE
Crap screws and thread lock on screws,, broke two trying to remove and third was tight all the way,, had to use vice grip pliers to remove,, had to leaver up scope tube to clear broken bolt..
Very slight damage.
Overall worth it.
One snag needed to buy adapter to fit on the skywatcher focal reducer £27.
But it's a push in 2" fit so gives easy option for removing focal reducer.
