I picked up an ASI224MC from High Point Scientific. I got it for $250. I'm looking forward to giving it a go. I've always been a bit disappointed with the 185MC due to it's severe amp glow. With the latest version, the 224MC has produced some stunning images on CN. So I decided to pull the trigger. I only use the 185MC as an autoguide camera now. I'm looking forward to giving it a try when it gets here.

Good luck with this camera.
It has a lot of amp glow too if you do long exposures ( more than 15").
I will like to read your experiences here.

I just got mine upgraded. Amp glow is way better now.
It will be really interesting to see how you think it compares to your other cameras Rob.
Really like mine now. It's great grab and go - even though the colour and saturation isn't as good as the dslr and 071

I had my first light with the ASI224MC last night. Here are the images. I was playing around with Sharpcap which is why the number of stack are so long. ED80T-CF/AVX, ASI224MC, no darks or flats. M31 (157x5s) NGC 869 (36x2.5s) NGC 7538 (30x10s) NGC 5907 (29x10s)

Good contention of amp glow. Only NGC 7538 has some at upper right corner.
But if you don't use dark field correction its a very good result.
NGC 869 has very nice and round stars.

Very nice images, Rob. Congrats on the purchase and on your first outings shots! What gain did you use?
BTW, have you tried the SharpCap Polar Align routine? ... it's very easy to use and works a treat. Currently I use my 224 in a 50mmx162mm guidescope for PA, then do a one star alignment on the handcontrol of the mount and I'm done.
cheers Howie

Gain was 350. I have used the Polar Alignment feature. It works very well. I've been using it for a while with the ASI185MC/50mm Guidescope.
I tried out the plate solving as well. It works well as long as you're within 15 degrees of the object in question. There's a bug in the code though if you're outside 15 degrees (it keeps on trying to plate solve and never seems to fail. There's no way to stop it once it starts (the cancel button is quickly closed). Robin said it will be fixed in 3.1.

Nice. So you use polar align on your guidescope. I'm using it with my main scope. I suppose it doesn't matter ? As long as your fov is wide enough ?
Edit: and nice images.

I use it in the main scope for polar aligning. My FOV is wide enough with the ED80T.
