[NOTE Ooops ... just corrected the wording on the orig post below! My bad. I originally said I shortened "the OTA focal length by about 35mm". Thats incorrect. The big sensor in the DLSR was originally unable to be pushed into the scope far enough to reach focus. By shortening the OTA length it pushes the focal point further outwards, so it is around where the DSLR requires it to be.}
....
The xx12gt AltAz did not focus my Canon 700D so I drilled some extra holes in the struts to effectively shorten the OTA length by about 35mm. This now allows the APS-C camera to come to focus nicely as the shorter length of OTA pushes the focus point further out towards the focuser. I tested the position to drill the holes by using four clamps to hold the secondary assembly in place while I focused the DSLR. I also put an extension tube I had lying around with the Orion 35mm Eyepiece inserted to also try to get that at the same focal point. I managed to achieve an almost parfocal setup ... put on the ext tube with the Orion EP inserted and visual works fine, then take off the EP and its ext tube and insert the camera for a very small tweak in focus using just the fine tune knob on the two speed focuser and that brings the camera to focus. Very impressed with the final setup.
Video of the first test - Lunar surface liveview HD video - link below. Be sure to set the highest HD setting, then make it fullscreen to see how nicely it all worked.
Cheers, Howie
