Finally got a chance to give the G-Star Ex3 another run. Been looking at getting standard (set and forget) exposure settings for “live” deep sky viewing. Until I can get some kind of cooler made up, dark frame subtraction is necessary. For most of these snaps I used the same (5x20s) dark file. Darks only need to be re-done if the exposure parameters change significantly. I’ve settled on a set and forget exposure time of 20 seconds. For dim objects like some of those posted here I used a x2 or x3 additive stack. Brighter objects don’t need this. For dim objects I also used the de-noise function in the camera control software. Bright objects don’t really need this. It is basically instantaneous and is fairly mild in its effect. So if you ignore the time taken for the darks that will be re-used – just part of the initial set up really - you are looking at about 20 sec for bright DSOs plus about 60 sec for the stack for magnitude 9+ (say about 90 sec). It’s likely that this approach can be improved, but now at least I can just go out and observe without having to push too many buttons. Robert

Well done Robert. It can take a few ventures out with a camera to learn what it can do, and what settings work best. I really like your results with 2070 and 1313

Thanks Ken
Just need to get the pictures on to a bigger screen so I can sit back and relax.
My blind eyes aren't up to staring at a laptop screen for long periods these days.

Thanks for sharing Robert, I watch with great interest your work as the G Star EX3 As this is the way I want to go with my first dive into Video Astronomy.

Thanks Dave
I think it will be possible to set up the G-Star and tour around the universe without having to fuss with the computer too much.

They're nice shots. Use the darks. As you say it only takes a minute while setting up. Ana it really helps the 224.

Robert
I have itchy feet and a short attention span. But I'm going nowhere fast. Haven't had a decent night for nearly two months - between bad weather and "stuff" getting in the way.
Keep posting those great pics !
Cheers Chris

Thanks Ken Just need to get the pictures on to a bigger screen so I can sit back and relax. My blind eyes aren't up to staring at a laptop screen for long periods these days. I use a 24" TV connected to an Intel Stick pc. The Stick PCs connect via an HDMI port. No more squinting!
