Hi all, I have a few old camera lenses and wondered if anybody has tried using these with a video camera. I know you can get adaptors for astro cameras, to attach lenses, but are they available for my pd camera ? I have a Canon 70-210 f 4 EF lens with manual focus I would like to try.

Hi I have used some of my old Practika lenses with the relevant adapter and they work great. Here are a few shots taken with a Carl Zeiss 130mm lens on the Samsung 2000p. The FOV for M31 is spot on and great for wide field, Excellent shots Carl! I have not been able to get anything like that with my camera!

Hey Laurie as you can see Carl uses the lenses to great effect! Also Johnno was using one the other day on his first broadcast to test things out. It looked to work really well! We had a good discussion about it. You just need to find out what mount the lens has. Its prob M42. This is what you want if it is. www.scopesnskies.com/prod/148.htmlAlso Carl... really nice pics! How are you taking these? are you piggybacking on your scope?

Glad they are useful, yes Chris I DIY'ed the camera with lens on a spare dovetail on the mount no scope it was an experiment night. Using a reflector I dont have the bonus of using reducers so to get the big guys in the sky I have to use lenses which work very well.
I would piggyback but the Eq3/2 mount is just about rated for the 150p.
Its the first time I have been able to capture M33 whole and the full M31, well worth having a go.
Carl

Excellent shots Carl, you would think they where done through a scope.
yes mine is the old M42 screw in type lens, the only reason I went for that fitting is the lens are cheap and you can pick up a good one on flea bay for next to nothing and got the adapter from where Chris suggested, seems to be the cheapest place in the UK for one

Another thing that you might be able to track down is old Movie camera lenses.
With the popularity of digital stuff, old C mount Film camera lenses are sitting on shelves in camera shops and even second hand dealers collecting dust. Might be able to offer a few dollars for them. Look for them in ebay etc too. Lots of people don't realise they fit some new Digital video cameras. They were very common on old 16mm film cameras and thousands are laying around not being used.
They are called C mount lenses. C mount lenses screw directly onto Video Astronomy cameras because our cameras are C mount. CS lenses are the same thing, just need a small adaptor that usually comes with C mount cameras anyway. All it does is move the lens out about 1/4" to achieve focus.
I use a lens from an old Hollywood Movie Camera (it was used in the movie 'Tootsie') and it works great for very wide field, or I can zoom in.
Go searching for 16mm movie camera lenses.

I've seen quite a few of these on flea bay but wasn't sure if they would work ok with our cams. Do they give a better image than slr lens

Yes. they are professional lenses, often worth thousands of dollars but being flogged off for a few hundred.
CCTV lenses are cheap mass produced low quality lenses costing anywhere from $2 to $200.
