That website always amuses me You may notice that on each page they list the filters in reverse order to the way they are shown in the coloured examples on the left. The information is great, but confusing for people that don't work out that it is reversed

Somebody made a good go at explaining the use of filters but to me the definitive treatise on filters was written by Jim Thompson: <http://www.karmalimbo.com/aro/>
His website has a lot of very good information. Occasionally you may catch him broadcasting on NSN.ca

Nice description of filters.
+1 for Jim Thompson. He explains the filters for light pollution really well. And on CN there's an excellent thread which compares various LPF types and brands.
It's quite surprising the lack of correlation between cost and performance.
