Hello, and welcome to the vendor page for Gondwana Telescopes. You may ask why a dob builder is advertising in a video astronomy forum. Dobs are not supposed to be much chop for VA, right? Well, with the right systems in place, yes, a dob is a very good VA option! The right system includes a quality OTA, a balanced OTA, a finely crafted mount. And then coupled to an equatorial platform, VA is possible. VA is also not immune to the bane of light pollution. It also benefits from a dark sky. So portability in the scope is important. This is where instruments come into their own - by being especially portable. Normally a large equatorial mount would be required for a 8" instrument. Yet all a dobsonian requires is an equatorial platform, like on of the Crossbow Equatorial platforms, for a totally compact and portable system. Sure, there are many compact solid tube Newtonians, but can you do this with just any scope? There are three dobs in the pic below - two 12" dobs and a 17.5": OR, how about FOUR 12" dobs... Welcome to the vendors section of the forum,I have wanted a dob for a while,I really like the skywatcher truss goto ones,if my partner carol gets rid off the aviary in the back garden I will be pestering her to let me build an observitory and have had the idea that the sw truss dob would be the type of scope I would put in it.. here's hoping.

Hi Alex. Interesting looking stuff, your Dobs. The EAA kit is getting so sensitive and when used with derotation and stacking software which is coming along in leaps and bounds ... who needs an equatorial platform!? cheers

Thank you for your comments, Davy and Howie. Indeed, who needs an equatorial platform! Like everything else, it is an option that will appeal more to some people than the EAA kit may. The trick is a dobsonian design that fulfils a portability, compactness and robustness set of requirements. An equatorial platform, like the Crossbow one, then compliments the same portability, compactness and robustness requirements that a larger scope design with fixed servo motors just will not. It is all about finding the best solution for the individual. Alex.
