Hi..couple of months ago I looked into the possibility of using more than one camera on my imaging rig, I felt the weather at my home was getting worse and scope time was getting less and less.so I searched ebay for a multi channel usb grabber, found that a four channel usb grabber was available so ordered one up..fitted cameras to it but what I found thier was a massive time delay in what has happened at the camera to image displayed on screen, you could press the menu button on the camera and have a snooze basically. .so I looked into the possibility of recording to a cctv device called a dvr..the dvr having a built in hard drive can store the inputs from four cameras at one time and would free up your computer for other uses..the dvr can come as a 12v system so could be used at remote locations or as a permanent fixture in an observatory. .the dvr can also be linked to a router and its operations controlled via computer..some also have the ability to be used via mobile phone..
I have bought one and viewed live images and thought it was far better than usb grabbers..problem with mine was it would not transfer images to usb memory stick to transfer to computer..waiting on it being collected by courrier to go back for testing/refund...davy

Update on my cctv dvr....it was finally picked up by courier. ..customer service has been shocking. .if im lucky it will get repaired. .if im luckier I will get an upgraded model and delighted if I got my money back.. Its a brilliant idea to use one for astrovideo and next step in video capture hardware should have been up and tested/reviewed by now.. Davy

Cctv dvr set up...focused on a lit area about a mile away done a quick record not tried backing up to usb yet..happy.yes very...will be a fantastic piece of kit I hope..could have a cam on scope..a couple of cams with a wider lens's sitting on top of scope..a cam/lens on a very wide capture on a tripod ...could even have two rigs set up...new dimension to video astronomy in my view...cant wait to get it up n running way I want it to linked to a router/ internet..remote view on phone even.davy

Ordered a wireless router to link to the dvr via a lan cable and hopefully it will wireless link to my laptop and my mobile phone..I dont have a Internet connection at my flat dont see the point when im not in a lot..I have my phone that I link my laptop too for Internet ..so might take a bit if working out...the set up is for mobile dark sites anyway and for broadcast if it all goes ok..

The word aaaargh comes hand in hand with my attempts to integrate cctv to computer...my problem quite simple..so ithought....all I need is to transfer captures from cctv dvr to laptop. ..ach nae problem it had a usb port for back up..buys a 32gb usb stick...dvr dosent recognise it..plug in an ext hard drive 320gb recognised it .transfer files not a chance sits and says checking for eternity..so got a wireless router to hopefully transfer files via the software supplied..ive set ip address of router to the dvr...linked cable to router and laptop..now here is the prob I don't have broadband in house all done via my mobile wifi hot spot. . In dvr client software it dosent show up dvr in the program ..tried direct from dvr to laptop still nothing..think I need either a cctv or comuter wizard on this prob...

Could you save directly onto the external hard drive? Means having 1tb hard drive is pointless lol but might work easier to copy to the laptop?

Davy, is the mobile hotspot a Adhoc .
My Andriod phone or tablet will not see Adhoc . my wireless SkiFi telescope controller creates a adhoc wireless network but my phone or tablet cant see it. so I had to buy a mini wireless router and make a connection thru that.
have you got a pdf manual for the dvr if so post it and we all can have a look at it
