That would be fascinating to see. I'm not much of a boat person, but I just love those wooden clipper ships!!

I have been lucky, over the years I have had the opportunity to sail on two square rigged sailing ships, sail training on extended voyages. Hard work but a great sense of achievement at the end of the voyage. The downside is on midnight watch up front in rough seas when it is blowing a near gale and pouring down with rain. A four hour watch seems like an eternity, frozen silly and thinking, what the heck am I doing this for? Climbing the masts and rigging is also a challenge the first time round, after that, it becomes addictive. All my pics of those day are slides & prints, but must find a couple to scan & post.
Hobart must be one of the most delightful cities to live in or close to, so much maritime history, especially given it was the main whaling port and departure point for Antarctic explorations in the past. The waterfront still has many of the original old sandstone buildings, store, warehouses etc, now turned into various galleries for art works, etc.

Great, great photos Shevill, thank you! It looks a place where if you vacation you might just fall in love with it.
My wife and I got to see whales up close in both Nova Scotia (honeymoon) and off of Vancouver and they are just amazing creatures. There were some 6' waves that gave us some pretty good poundings in Vancouver and I couldnt imagine doing that at night, much less from being up on the rigging.
We have dreamed about having a place in Nova Scotia some day.

Hi Rick, Taking in sail up the top of the masts during bad weather is very challenging, and that is when one is most often reefing sails to reduce speed etc. In a gale the front end and back end, bow & stern go up and down a lot more than midships. I have some friends coming from Canada again next week, they visit every few years, they love the place so much. We always go down to a superb fish restaurant on the waterfront for a meal. I get a steady stream of overseas visitors, mainly because visitors who come to Tasmania always visit Hobart, and I am only 10-15 minutes drive out of town. I am the most southerly astronomical observatory of any significance in Australia, next stop Antarctica. We often get events taking place visible from our latitude, occultations of Pluto being a regular annual event, we get astronomers from many countries come down here to image this for photometry measurements.I have done a few projects with NASA as well: picasaweb.google.com/109921669020426367250/Asteroid2012DA14EquipmentScopesCameras?authuser=0&feat=directlinkPluto Occultation's: picasaweb.google.com/109921669020426367250/PlutoOccultationMtCanopus12June2006ImagesCopyrightShevillMathers?authuser=0&feat=directlinkpicasaweb.google.com/109921669020426367250/PlutoOccultation200910?authuser=0&feat=directlinkClear skies... I got to meet Don Yeomans back in 1985... he was giving a speech on comets at the university I ended up attending.
There are advantages to being the southern-most observatory!!
