One Problem often faced when doing a 'Live' on-line Internet Broadcast of our Video Astronomy is the amount of programs open at the same time to achieve a Broadcast.
With our own in-house Broadcast set-up in this website we are using JustinTV, and either OBS, X-split, or another capture/control program. A Broadcaster also likes to have the Forum open, plus often a Broadcaster also likes having Google Search open for Information about objects that we are seeing on the screen.
The problem then becomes a matter of the Monitors 'Real Estate'. Where to put everything on the Monitor.
Using so many programs requires the use of two Monitors, even without the Forum and Google Search. That way the software can be spread over a very large area, and the most critical window, the Lasso'd Miloslick Camera Capture window, can be left untouched.
There will be many different combinations from Broadcasters, but for this exercise I will explain how to take advantage of Monitor Real Estate using the Programs I use.
The most critical Window that should not be interfered with is the Capture software 'Miloslick' as it will be Lasso'd to use in JustinTV. Any other programs that are placed over the top of, or underneath the lasso'd Miloslick Video frame will appear on JustinTV (unless you want it to appear, like when showing your viewers something about the software or a photo from file etc).
In this sense, Miloslick is the Program best placed onto a Auxiliary (second) Monitor connected to the main Laptop/Desktop.
The Layout:
1. Open Miloslick on your Auxiliary (second) monitor. Place the top left corner of the Miloslick window exactly into the top left corner of the Monitor (this will make sense later).
2. Open OBS/X-split on your main monitor.
After opening OBS/X-split there is a capture tool (or lasso) that allows you to capture any part of a Monitor, and is size adjustable.
On clicking 'Select Region' you will see a semi-transparent area open up. This is the lasso box that you will place over the Video Frame in Miloslick. Use your Mouse curser to change the size and shape of the lasso frame to place it exactly over the Miloslick Video.
Once it is located where you want it, click outside the lasso area and it will now be locked.
Anything you move into that area will appear on JustinTV. But for now all it should show is whatever is in the Video Frame.
The reason I said to place the Miloslick top left corner into the top left corner of the monitor is so that if you move Miloslick to show viewers your settings, you can easily place the Video back in the lasso frame by returning Miloslick back into the top left hand corner.
(for anyone used to using the Lasso window in WebcamMax, Manycam etc, you will now the Lasso window is movable. With OBS it isn't, so we move the objects into the lasso area rather than move the Lasso onto the objects)
Place no other software, programs, or websites on the Auxillary Monitor. Only Miloslick and the Lasso window (which should be invisible).
3. Open JustinTV on your Main Monitor. You will still have access to OBS/X-split as it will be minimised, but still on the main monitor.
Log in to Justin and check you have access.
4. Open OBS/X-split on the Main Monitor and click 'Start Streaming' (or 'Preview Stream' if you want to test the look of the broadcast).
You will now be broadcasting on JustinTV whatever is in the lasso'd window on your Auxiliary Monitor.
You can also open tabs with our Forum and other websites on the Main monitor.
You will now have your Monitors like this:
(animated)
If you prefer to have less on your Computer so it operates better you can have a second computer for access to any other websites you want to use, and only have JustinTV as the only website on the Main computer.
You will be set up like this:
I hope this makes your Broadcasting experience a lot easier.
Remember, if there is anything you wish to show your viewers, just move it into the Lasso'd area over the Miloslick Video Frame.
Good luck and have fun.
