So, back to scopes... it looks like if I went with that crazy scope setup that I could get it all under the 75% mark of a 40 lbs capacity mount like the Orion Atlas EQ/G. Video: MallinCam VRC8 (16.40 lbs) Orion ED80T CF ( 5.50 lbs) Orion ST80 + SSAG ( 3.25 lbs) Misc Mount/Tubes ( 2.00 lbs) MallinCam Jr Pro ( 0.63 lbs) - - - - - - - - - ----------- (27.78 lbs) = 69% of 40lb class mount (Orion Atlas)
AP1 (non-Planetary, Spectro) MallinCam VRC8 (16.40 lbs) Orion ED80T CF ( 5.50 lbs) Orion ST80 + SSAG ( 3.25 lbs) Misc Mount/Tubes ( 2.00 lbs) Canon 450D FS Mod ( 1.50 lbs) Celest. Skyris FW ( 0.69 lbs) SA 100 + 3x Filts ( 0.40 lbs) - - - - - - - - - ----------- (29.74 lbs) = 74% of 40lb class mount (Orion Atlas)
AP2 (Planetary) MallinCam VRC8 (16.40 lbs) Orion ED80T CF ( 5.50 lbs) Orion ST80 + SSAG ( 3.25 lbs) Misc Mount/Tubes ( 2.00 lbs) ZWO ASI120MC ( 0.22 lbs) Celest. Skyris FW ( 0.69 lbs) SA 100 + 3x Filts ( 0.40 lbs) - - - - - - - - - ----------- (28.36 lbs) = 71% of 40lb class mount (Orion Atlas)

So today I got the crummy news that the VRC8 is on the order of 23 lbs when you add in the finder and mounting and focuser etc. That definitely puts me above the 75% threshold into the low to mid 30s at least. Now if I bump up to the next class mount, I may have broke the budget. Not sure where the 16 came from... maybe that was the VRC6. So back to the drawing board I guess. I suppose I could just forgo the shorter f/l stuff.

Ken, thanks that's where I think I got my original numbers.
But here's the email I got from Jack:
...
As far as weight, I just shipped my VRC-8 Carbon Fiber to a customer and the shipping weight was 24#. That is the weight of the OTA, extension rings, finderscope, and focuser - plus the box and packing.
Rock received today a large shipment of scopes including 8" metal tube and 8" carbon fiber tube scopes.
...
Yours truly,

Yep, sounds about right.
The shipping box and protective packing would add up to a bit. The box itself would be pretty solidly built.
But the good news is that after you unpack it, the scope, finder, and focuser only weighs no more than 17 pounds. The carbon fibre version even less.

Well, mixed results... I put it into my son's 102GT but turns out the Jr Pro is a little too heavy for the 102GT mount! So I could only target Jupiter because that was the only object I could keep in frame. I had to adjust it multiple times because when I would change the settings with the buttons in the back, it would often bump Jupiter out of frame. Anything lower in the sky was a no go at all as the mount couldn't keep it up -- guess I need to buy it some Viagra, heh. I did get to play with the settings and used the suggested planetary settings, but never got any cloud bands to resolve, just an overexposed glowing disk with the 4 moons visible or a brown smudge with no moons. Seeing wasn't bad because my Coulter 8" f/4.5 dob was real clear. I may try to get the 102OTA mounted on the EQ6 and give it another go tonight. Here is true first light with the camera after getting the 102GT to a decent focus.

Do you remember the exposure settings Rick?

I turned the Sense Up to off. ALC I tried settings from 200 (over exposed but moons) to 750 (brown smudge no moons) AGC was set to off.
I had the wireless thingie set to 7 seconds.
The image above was prior to reading the settings, heh. Just pretty much plugged in and turned on and focused.

Congrats on the new cam Rick! The wireless controller is the exposure controller as far as i know. So if you had that set to 7 seconds Jupiter would have always been mega overexposed mate so no chance of cloud bands etc.

Oh doh! Of course... and I was meddling with all these other settings and I didn't even think about changing that!
Thanks for that knock upside my head!
