Reason I've asked this question is,, can see it won't be long before I need to do an upgrade,, By this I mean a pretty decent job, Looking at desktop instead of laptop for a change,, Looking at the old interweb, it says for video editing a fast cpu and a lot of ram,, somebody asked the question would it not be better to get a gamer pc,, answer back was,, a bit over kill,,

have an i5 laptop in dome and connect via ethernet to a bungalow with a desktop and couple of screens 5 metres away. So I control the camera via Radmin server and viewer. The mount is controlled on synscan on an ipad by wifi. This works very well . Also,I can cover up the screen in the dome .This cuts out a lot of screen light which affects the image. Have a shed for the other scopes. It has a canyon nuc computer with a couple of screens. It is also connected via ethernet to the bungalow via Radmin, but most of the time ,I just sit in the shed. It is quite comfortable there ,even on cold nights. All the computers have at least 8gig ram. The desktop and the nuc have ssd cards so everything works fast. I use sharpcap and will do some stretching on Fitswork4 or FITS liberator which only takes 30 secs I did a post back in August whinging about the quality of the teamviewer image. I have since changed to radmin which is faster to respond and the images are clearer dome
bungalow
shed ....everything is wired up and ready. I lift the HEQ5 out the door, connect the scope and then move the left screen outside while I align the scope. Setup time is minimized. My housekeeping skills are poor. I leave the door open and it is very dusty cheers paul

Funny you should ask, Davy. I am presently about to upgrade my Observatory computer. My old laptop is dying Because I know nothing about computers I have been asking my son who is a bit of a PC Guru. I run 3 cameras simultaneosly (the 4th, a guiding camera, has its own little laptop), ToupSky Capture software, Cartes du Ciel to drive the mount through Synscan WiFi, have internet open often with several tabs running, and I occasionally open files at the same time. He said all I would need is a desktop or Mini PC running Windows 10, AMD, 8GB RAM minimum, 256 or 512GB, and Solid State Drive. Problem is, they all cost money and I don't have any I am doing a copy of my C drive tonight and saving it to a 1TB portable storage thingy so if my observatory lappy dies at least I will have copies of stuff

I agree with your son ,Ken. You need 8gb ram minimum and a SSD. The ssd's are very fast. If you need extra storage ,an external hard drive is pretty cheap. More important to have the ssd than storage. cheers Paul

Phew it's a mine field out there trying to just get the right fit computer,, think I would need to get something close and bump up the ram,, thinking about using the 58" smart tv as a monitor,, hard drive wise I'm covered with a a 6tb external hard drive,, so I can concentrate on an ssd for the computer

I have always tried to get the best can afford,, well more like the best that leaves me broke😂. Computer tech changes that quick, there is no way I can keep up with the developments,, so I try and get one that is going to be half decent three years down the line, My favourite laptop is my Toshiba Windows 7 and it's now lost Microsoft support,, devastated 😭,, So this time it's got to be a tower unit,, looking to integrate it into astronomy but a good all rounder for the flat,, as you guys have said a fast cpu,, Looking at an i5 but the i7 would be the preferred one. 16gb of ram, 32gb preffered but want the mother board to be able to go to 64,, 4gb cooled graphics card,, Were up at the £1000 mark 😬
The astronomy kit is just going to get better and more demanding,, usb3 camera's have been out a while and I wonder,, what the next development in camera technology will be,, the smart phone has basically killed off the standard video camera so,, what will manufacturers do,, Branch out more into astronomy hopefully,, Astronomy Scotland Facebook group is growing at an unprecedented rate,, Never saw so many new astronomers join in such a short time frame,, so maybe the big companies will invest more.
Even software is getting more intensive,, So a good computer now is a step in the right direction,,
Dear santa,, 😂
