Have the opportunity to get a new telescope and I m looking at the skywatcher esprit 80 Ed,, The esprit 100 Ed would be nice but outwith the budget,,
The esprit 80 is f5 and a triplet so is a step up from my evostar ed80,, don't get me wrong,, I love my ed80 and would never part with it,, I've decided it's definitely a small refractor I want,, portable set up scope,, looked at Williams optics and they look really nice scopes,, but the f5 esprit seems to tick the boxes.. What's folks views,,,

Nebula season is coming up and I am hoping to put the esprit 80 to good use if the weather plays ball. For various reasons, I havent used it much as yet, but am impressed with it so far. Have the starizona apex 0.65 focal reducer for it, which will take the f5 to F3.2. Havent had a chance to use it yet. If a refractor can handle f3.2 then it must be something special. I am thinking of adding my 50 ed refractor (which I never use) and have a go at guiding with the ASIair only because it looks like it is straight forward on the Pi 4. If it is not easy, I wont do it because I dont have any real need for guiding, and I dont have the patience. cheers Paul

Cheers Paul,, definitely the scope for me,, can you try the focal reducer,, I read somewhere because of the Way it's set up it could not take a reducer,, I have the skywatcher 0.85 for the evostar ed80 I could try once I get scope. Was surprised not to see lots of revues for it though,, expensive scope right enough

Trevor from Astrobackyard reviewed the Starizona Apex .65 focal reducer on his Esprit 100 f5.5 and got good pinpoint stars at f3.6. If I can get pinpoint stars on the esprit 80 at f3.2 without CA,then that would be impressive. The only trouble is,I havent done it yet. cheers Paul

That SGL thread says the meade/celestron 0.63 SCT reducer will screw onto ED80 by using some "bit" from the Orion 2" prime focus adaptor - or similar threaded adapter which allows it to screw onto the ED80. That would yield f4.7 @ 378mm FL. Here's the thread ... stargazerslounge.com/topic/39837-meade-63-reducer-with-ed80/

Skywatcher don't make a focal reducer but flk are saying the 0.79 works,, at 200+ euros,, will give it a miss, F5 standard is pretty sweet and as fast as my sw explorer 200pds,, I will be happy with it,, ordering scope on Monday,, before I change my mind 😁 Not going to happen,, when I looked at aperture / focal length and the F5,, this was scope for me,, think it will be a nice addition to my kit,, Always thought I'd have went for a 180 mak,,

this was the ngc 3372 as a 19sec x 10 stack.on the zwo294. It was saved as a FITS file and converted to jpeg. The FITS files seem darker than the single frame which was saved in png. I need to save straight to jpeg from the camera. Astonomy tools says this combination gives large undersampling with a 3.7arcsec/pixel so the zwo 183 is more suited to the esprit 80 with the focal reducer It is less washed out, but hardly worth the extra time cheers Paul

I have the SW Esprit 100 ED and it is one of the early ones and the quality can only be described as poor. Focuser has more or less packed up altogether, it only adjusts on one side where the dual speed controls are. Rubber on the focuser controls perished and fell off a long time ago. Focuser operation can only be described as 'rough'. Disappointing is the only way to describe it.

Possibly quality problems with the early scopes, but I wish that I had bought a Williams Optics scope instead, they have had some production issues as well, it's a difficult call to make.

Well I will get a look at new scope tomorrow when I visit my daughter and family, I had it posted to her address. Looking forward to see how it looks in real life. The scope is only possible due to the generous gift my uncle left me in his will,, Bobby passed away earlier this year and is greatly missed by all the family and ( uncle John) his brother, Bobby was a grafter all his years and even blindness due to diabetes never slowed him down,, old school,, and Clyde built 😁. Bobby or rab as many called him, was some guy, both him and uncle John both looked after me as a kid and I was always sitting on the side of the road watching them fix there cars and then Ford transit van,, which got me into the motor trade and fixing cars for the last 37 years,, Used to spend time,, doing his favourite pastime,, having a bevy ( alcoholic beverage in Scots) and talk into the small hours when we stayed at my mums,, stories he could tell,, fantastic. So the telescope was bought in his honour and a keepsake to remember him by. Cheers rab r.i.p gbnf
