some people about my age may remember when t.b. caused a lot of lung problems , and iron lungs were invented to assist breathing. they were large cumbersome machines. i was thinking of a modern version [portable] low tech unit which could be used in the field until the patient reached professional help. roughly the size of a laptop, with the shape of a hovercraft rim to give a seal around the abdominal cavity, a bellows type arrangement worked by by a small 12 volt air pump reversed to give a low partial vacuum to raise and lower the diaphragm.and a timer and solenoid to run the pump. the international shortage of ventilators might require stopgap measures. any ideas.

Fantastic idea John! Not being very medically or biologically clever I wouldn't have a clue. Maybe make up a sample and show it to someone in medical research and let them build them.

thanks ken, your spot on, it would require engineers familiar in medicine to bring the old iron lungs up to date. these units might only work in the early stages , then move on to hospital ventilators if air tubes and nasal passages constrict [just like getting a wasp sting when you drink a can of sugary pepsi that has attracted it].
