Guys if you need a good reliable supply that gives you 12 Volts at 12 Amps and you have an old computer lying around there is a power supply in it that screws out and with a simple bit of DIY you have a supply that does everything for free!! Got an old laptop, does that count?

No mate has to be one from an old tower, the worst is the dumps are full of them going to waste.

uncle john here, chris, if you take your scope on safari to the dark sky parks in dumfries and galloway or keilder forest, a deep cycle leisure battery 80 or 110 amp is something to think about,, as carl and john mentioned. the drain on this battery could be from- laptop[through 12 volt adapter], 2 dew heaters, 12 volt television, 2 video cameras [1 for laptop, 1 on auxiliary scope for tv]to compare picture outputs. a 12 volt hair drier[if the dew heaters dont work].a 12volt site lamp[red filter],did i forget the supply to the scope itself?, the liddl charger may be capable for these batteries ,"inteligent"chargers on e bay start about £50, on my camper i've got 2 off 110 amp leisure batts.in parallel =220 amps, and i still want more,[sounds like aperture fever] , anyway 12 volts are safer than 240 volts, except, many years ago when i was young and stupid,i had a fight with a dud battery on my ford zephyr, had it on charge in local hostel ,in a hurry, re-installed it in the car,[the keys were still in the ignition from a previous attempt at starting], the spark ignited the hydrogen and blew the tops off the battery, covered me in sulphuric acid, luckily there was washing facillities in the hostel and i hosed myself down[it was starting to itch by that time].got dried and went to the bar for a pint of guinness.

uncle john, can remember you telling me this years ago,,nothing like a sulphuric acid face peel to keep you looking young,,,lol,,, agree with what you say big amps required for the scopes now with video cams ect to run..especialy at dark sky sites,,no point going if the power runs out half way through the night

Hi unc.. 95 amps is for cranking an engine with a dead battery..garage use..trickle charger or smart charger is better option..if you use thus on boost ie 95 amps for any length of time you could and would damage the battery, buckle the plates and with no sumps on batteries now will cause an internal short of the battery.

Lol uncle John...you got covered in acid thats brutal man! Im guessing you got lucky and it could have turned out much worse!
Its a good point about what will be needed when out at a dark site. Something i will need to consider.
Ive wanted to go to a dark site for ages but to be honest with all the equipment i have now its not really possible. Cant even fit the scope in the car. I have considered hiring a van and going up north somewhere for the night. But with our weather its impossible to tell when will be a good night to go.
