Of course ๐..there had to be dual role for this wee darlin,,, Now this is just my thoughts,,๐ This camera has removable lens and you can buy a nice expensive adapter that allows you to fit your DSLR camera lenses,, so I I get one of these,, there is nothing stopping me fitting the camera body to an ed80 and giving it a go,, ok it's no going to be a Hubble job. But as usual give me your thoughts,, given in mind that you could in theory possibly even in your wildest dreams get astrotoaster to work,, if you dumped footage into its monitoring folder.
Howie,, how mad or feasible do you think it is.
You guys,, it's time to think out the box again..๐

Howie,, how mad or feasible do you think it is. You guys,, it's time to think out the box again..๐ Gday davy. Don't like the chances mate ... but push it / try it out as that's the only real way we are all going to find out. Re Toaster reading video frames ... nah it doesn't. It only reads still frames. But there are some issues with the xl1 which I found out via a youtube video on the XL1 (link down below). The problems are outlined in that video. Things the bloke mentioned are (1) it will not output the video feed directly ... it will only record the image to mini DV tape. Then you have to playback the recorded video to whatever device ... and (2) it only outputs via the old school analogue cables or firewire. Not many laptops and TV's these days accept those old inputs. So all in all, I think your NV escapades with telescopes, bird spotting scopes, and camera lens is a much better proposition But as I said .... we only truly learn if these things work by someone trying it out. So get to it davy .... push that xl1 hard! Utube xl1 video link

Yip it's back to analogue,, 1 hour of film 1hr to capture to digital via usb grabber,, primarily it's for band work but I believe I can achieve moderate goals with it,, and yip if it's not really been tried,, then since I have the kit,, let's give it a go. Nothing ventured as they say,, software wise I think I can still reverse engineer to get it on astrotoaster,, only problem is going to be degraded footage due to compression,, in theory

Finally got most of the bits and pieces to get me up and running with this camera, it is FireWire to computer for video transfer,, but I only have the old Panasonic tough book running xp and didn't fancy going down this road,, so thinking out the box,, I bought another easycap usb grabber, s lead and used an RCA cable for audio, and it recorded live from the camera feed,, don't even need to record to the tape,, Love it ๐ The zoom on this bad boy is very good and you could get a half decent moon shot but... Let's try it on an ed80 ,, for fun and scientific research of course. Lol. Just put in an order for the 2nd hand converter that allows DSLR lenses to be fitted,, which means I can now hook it up to the ed80,, it says in the manual that any lens has to be put in manual mode,, so it in theory, but,,, Is it going to work, I do not know. But will be first to try it , can't find anything on the web.

Had spoke about the use of this camera and how would it work, Well think we can say it fits,, it's a heavy camera but the heq5 handles that, achieved focus on the hills opposite the flat. I bought a s video lead and used an RCA lead for the audio ,hooked it up to a new ezcap usb grabber and it captures the camera live feed ,no need to record to the tape,, going to try it on sharocap probably tomorrow night and see what I get,, The camera view finder is brilliant ,,, this would be a great feature to have on a astronomy camera

2nd picture showing the rest of the scope made it look fairly balanced. I saw the first picture and couldnโt see the context and thought โman, that is an awfully big cameraโ
Looks like a great setup. ๐

Bit of a gimmick post, but if astronomy camera manufacturers could do an LCD eyepiece LCD like on this camera,, now I would be very interested, imagine if you could do away with the tape deck and audio set up and make it sensitive what a set up you could have
