I took your advice Carlos and made sure the histogram peak was to the left and exposure time as low as possible. cheers Paul

Now you need a bit of postprocessing ...
Give Startools a chance or a similar one and you will see the colors and shadows a lot better. I would like to see this same improved photo, it can be fantastic

This nebula is spectacular, this is the result with 1 minute of Startools, if the photo was with more resolution it would improve much more Just to give you an idea ...

I can see what you mean,Carlos. I guess to keep in the spirit of videoastronomy I should add the pre as well as the post processing images . Here is another image of the carina nebula done the night before with intermittent clouds. This is sw 72 ed ,zwo 178, alt/az ,uv/ir filter ,altair 0.6 FR, which according to astrometry.net gives a FR of .67. To get the full 56 backfocus with spacers required for the 0.6 FR, I ran out of focus. With about 51mm of back focus I had plenty of in focus left. That put the original 420 FL of the 72ed to 280mm and the F5.8 to F3.9 I am going to like this little scope for travel.I am not sure how it will perform for the dim fuzzies. ngc 3372 11s x 17 a bit over 3 minutes which is my self imposed limit. cheers Paul

One click VA stretch and color adjustment

Thanks Howie I will download Windows Essentials and see how I go. Makes you wonder why photo gallery was scrapped for windows 10. Cheers Paul

I appreciate your input Carlos and Howie . As long as I get the mix of gain and exposure right, and the histogram peak is to the left,I am reasonably happy with the unprocessed image. I have downloaded both Startools and the Photo Gallery Editor and will give both of them a go. Carlos, both of your processed images got rid of the donut stars in the right bottom which I find interesting.
cheers Paul

For nebulae Startools is superior because it allows to balance the colors perfectly. It has retained the central part of the nebula quite well
