Paul, 2 blokes in our astro club have RASA's ... Dylan O'Donnell is one of them, and he has owned his 11" RASA for about 18 months. The link below shows his "Recently added" and nearly all are using the RASA. He has a nice widefield hi-resolution horsehead to Orion in there ... click on it when you get to it becausee you can zoom in and browse all over the place like youu're in space!. deography.com/

Thanks Howie. There have been many posts from RASA 11's but not from the RASA 8. What has changed in the RASA 8 is that the mirror locks have been removed. My RASA 8 has a tilted mirror and I am suspicious that there may a problem with mirror flop in the RASA 8 . cheers Paul

Those RASA's aren't cheap and Celestron build them for AP so what the heck were they thinking removing the mirror locks! Crazy! Are there any after market lock kits? BTW I'm guessing you are experiencing the problem even when well away from crossing the meridian (where it normally only happens badly with an SCT). If its only around the crossing of the meridian then you may have to not go up that high. Again stupidly crazy when you consider the intent of the RASA!

Howie Even with the mirror tilt ,the RASA 8 still produces the best images that I can do. I can live with that amount of tilt for the present , but I can imagine the astrophotographers would not be happy at all. I just wish Celestron would tell me what to do do about it. Some sort of plan would be useful. cheers Paul

"I just wish Celestron would tell me what to do do about it. Some sort of plan would be useful." cheers Paul Yes, well Paul, being a niche hobby, I think most of these telescope manufacturers treat their customers with contempt, and Celestron are IMHO no exception. In otherwords, I doubt Celestron will be thinking about a plan for your 8" RASA. Instead, I suspect some clever bod will find a 3D printable solution for the 8" mirror issue. Release the plan/code for it for free to assist the astro community. And then some other company will see that, start producing them ... and selling them for 1,000% markup on the cost of materials! And if the demand is really high for that company, then maybe Celestron will start doing the exact same 3d printable solution .... except they'll claim that theirs is much better than the oppositions and so charge 2,000% markup! Sigh!

Yes Howie Celestron's silence is deafening. I will be home in a little over a week.Hopefully I will have heard from Celestron by then. If not,I will continue to use it with the tilt because it still produces the best images I can do . Cheers Paul

Well, I am back from holiday and was looking forward to sorting out the RASA 8 tilt problems. I packed away all the scopes inside the house while away. I fractured my wrist last week and now cant lift the scopes. It will be a number of weeks before I can set things up again. I will keep emailing Celestron in the meantime and hope they answer before my wrist has healed. cheers Paul

Celestron have just contacted me and have offered to take the RASA 8 back to US to adjust the mirror tilt. For my purposes ,the mirror tilt is minor and the RASA 8 does what I bought it for. So ,I am going to sit tight and wait for this damned wrist to heal so I can get out and see what my new toy can do. The AMD dovetail for the HEQ5 arrived. It was easy to attach. Thanks for the info Howie . I then got Heather to help me put the RASA on the HEQ5 . I was all set to go as we have had very clear nights lately. The frustration of trying to manage the camera and scope with one arm plus the mosquitoes was too much. This grumpy old fart cracked it and went to bed. Also,I have noticed Bintel have announced the sale of the RASA 8 and will be available at the end of Feb.Their price is $2599. I paid a total of $2900 to buy from US, plus shipping, and taxes on arrival. My impatience was at a cost. cheers Paul

On Jan 27 andysea on CN posted first light for his RASA 8. When he received it the mirror was rattling around so he sent it back to Celestron and they promptly collimated it. He now appears very happy with it On Dec 21 ,I sent a private message to Ken James referring to one of the images " It is poorly focused as well. I didnt post it for general viewing as I may not be doing the scope justice but I suspect it may be faulty. When I lift the scope and give it a gentle shake the primary mirror rattles."
Ken informed me the mirror was tilted and the scope exhibited mirror flop. I tightened the Allen screws and the tilt improved.
Celestron have offered to take it back for collimation. I will take up that offer cheers Paul

Howie, Dylan O'Donnell has a youtube video on the unboxing of the RASA 8 but he did not put it through its paces. I presume he had no problems? cheers Paul

The RASA is a good telescope but:
In Europe it costs 2.195 euros + transportation !! Can not use filter wheel The filters are special ....
Money, money and more money
There are other cheaper combinations for those who do not want or cant spend a lot of money

I am surprised it is so expensive in Europe,Carlos. The $au is around 72cents and the RASA is $2599 at Bintel which is about the same price as the US.It is about the price of a good 80mm APO refractor.. When the teething problems get sorted, it will be one hell of a scope for EAA. My images will improve out of sight. I love these f/2 scopes. My next best scope for imaging is the Bintel 200/f4 newtonian which is $525. Now that is good value cheers Paul

No, I've given it away
The chromatic aberration was exaggerated and the stars of type O / B / A / F remained with frightful halos.
Only served for visual.

The Rasa arrived today. It was picked up by DHL on Feb 12,sent to Celestron in California ,mirror tilt fixed and back to Bendigo after 13 days. I'm pretty impressed with that. Celestron has emailed me 3 times over the 13 days to inform me of the progress and are very keen to get a good report. I am happy with the scope and happy with the service cheers Paul
