I'd never heard of an Analemma ... but reading my daily dose of SpaceWeather.com I saw the article below. I cut and paste it into a jpeg as the articles on the website change daily and any lik to the page will in future not show the article. The Analemma is the reason why in Melbourne for instance, the earliest sunrise is 10 Dec,the latest sunset is 4th Jan ,but the solstice (shortest night) is the 21-22 Dec Paul

Chris Many think that the longest day(solstice) means the earliest sunrise and latest sunset. The Analemma explains why this is not the case. This fact has very little to do with VideoAstronomy however Paul
