Quick update. I managed to make my control cable and it appears to work. I bought a 15mtr rs232 M/F serial lead and a 8 pin mini din. I cut off the male plug and stripped the outer sheathing on the cable back about 30mm. I then stripped the ends of the 8 wires and used a multimeter to identify which wires went to each terminal of the female plug. For the loop backs I just twisted them together and soldered them. I then covered the joints with shrinktube. For the 3 connections to the din plug, I removed the pins with long nosed pliers, soldered the wires to the pins and pushed them back into the correct holes again. Assembled the din plug casing and tested. Removing the appropriate pins from the din plug made soldering a breeze. All appears fine.

That made me laugh Chris. Electronics engineer I am definately not. It took me 3 attempts and I wasted £30 in the process. It would have been easier and cheaper to have bought one from the states. Still, I must take the positive from this....I learned something useful.

I do have a degree in electrical engineering, but only practice it as a hobby.
